UWHabs Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Need a creative way to get rid of Smoak off this roster, like eat half his salary, trade him for some big chew and then sign Edwin. I could potentially see a deal with the Rockies for Parra. They already have 3 LH OF better than him, so he's completely wasted on their roster. He was one of the worst players in baseball last year, but could potentially bounce back to at least be an okay 4th OF option. And Smoak would give them a usable player for 1B, allowing Desmond to play more often in the OF.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I think Blackmon would be a good target if you could get him for spects rather than a guy like Stroman. I think he could be good in a corner OF role and I think his new power could be legit (will obviously be less than in COL, but RC is a launchpad too).
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Just resign Jose, he'll give you 130 wRC+ and bad defense.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Talks ended after Jays said Smoak must be included in any deal. Rockies need a 1B. Stupid on their part.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 lol f*** off Colorado. Coming off a career year its not really the time to buy high on Blackmon. He'll likely be right back down to 2.0 fWAR, I'm pretty confident Stroman will surpass that. Edit: Just checked his projections, steamer has him at a whopping 1.2 fWAR
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Oh s***. I'd probably do Stroman + Smoak for Blackmon. Sign EE. Blackmon Travis Donaldson EE Morales Tulo Martin Upton/______ Pillar Dirtyyy
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Stroman will be traded this offseason. I saw a tweet of him

If the Rockies want to throw in Story or Rodgers, then sure No way do I want to buy high on Blackmon though, and Stroman would be buying VERY high.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Stroman for Blackmon would be a good deal if we had some way to replace Stroman's rotation spot.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 A front office that just gave up the #11 pick and 70M to a 31 year old Ian Desmond should be easily persuaded into taking Greene + Harold Ramirez package

This is the same Blackmon who is 30 years old and has had exactly ONE noticeably above average season in his career, has only two years of control and projects for 1.1 WAR. No thanks.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I thought he was a FA after 2019? He might be, I'm not 100% sure. It changes exactly nothing for me tbh.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 He might be, I'm not 100% sure. It changes exactly nothing for me tbh. Really. 3 yrs of a relatively cheap OF that can play RF, LF, and CF. Can steal 25-30 bases, hit 25-30 HR, hit .300 with probably at worst a .800 ops. That's worth trading Stroman unless he improves off of this past season imo.
agrushcow Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Not particularly interested in Blackmon...Coors inflates his #'s and he's on the wrong-side of 30. Good player, but no way I deal Stroman and his superior control for him. I'd consider Happ or something to that effect. I've asked once, but what would it take to get Dyson? Gives us elite defense, adds to team speed and doesn't handcuff us with a long-term. Cheap contract that frees us up to fill the other OF spot. Does McGuire, Zeuch or Pentecost get it done? Or are any of them too much? With Soler in the fold I'd be surprised if they don't move him.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Smoak has negative value... Lmao, not even close to make up the disparities in value between Stroman and Blackmon.

All of those things that you mentioned that he could do except for the stolen bases are a product of playing in Coors Field for his entire career. He's only hit above 20 homeruns once, last season when he hit 29, he's a career 105 wRC+ hitter, so his OPS in a less extreme park should be noticeably lower as should his batting average, and him being 30 means the days of 30+ stolen bases a season are likely behind him. He's also not a particularly good defender, sure he can play all OF positions but it's more at an average or below level, and with his age can only be expected to decline. Then there's Stroman who's already a very good pitcher, is much younger and has more control. Simply a much more valuable piece any way that you look at it. Stroman doesn't need to improve one bit from this season and he should still be expected to be easily more valuable than Blackmon over their control years.

Last year Blackmon hit 17 of 29 homers on the road and hit .313. Looks like he does well regardless of ball park. Won't see a .330bavg like he did at Coors, but .300 is totally in reality and is the type of hitter we need. Would be nice if it didn't cost Stroman though.

Though looking at his past years I wouldnt project that going forward.

He really has no home / road splits in terms of home runs or doubles, but he strikes out a TON more on the road and hits for a much lower average (.261 road, .334 home in his career). He had a fantastic season last year, but it's very unlikely that it's the new norm. I wouldn't mind trading for him, I just feel like Stroman is WAY too heavy a price. I do like the fact he can hit lefties.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Blackmon is 30 already and has a career 260/305/420 line outside Coors. WAR-wise he doesn't look that impressive. I'm not trading Stro straight up for that.
