Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 No. He's a bitter old man now. Probably fuming inside how he was a top hitter in the league with the Jays and might never get his big pay day. Glad the team got some value out of him while they could. Good luck to him
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Nope. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he signs with the Orioles or Rangers. Seems like a good fit for those teams. Dont know about Rangers. Might be a bit awkward for the team and fans for a bit but it's not up to them I guess. If they decide they want to take the risk on him, sure he would fit in just fine anywhere.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Don't we have Tulo and Martin coming off the books in 3 years? So the 4th year of any Encarnacion deal could probably be absorbed quite easily. I mean, realistically this ownership should be able to sign Eddie without even blinking but if we have to do the whole budget thing, I'm sure he still fits in there. Although I have to say, I think the numbers being thrown around on this board for his contract are on the low side. More goes into a decision like that. Edwin is probably the best DH in Baseball now that Ortiz is retired but it's a groundbreaking deal for a player who only hits. I know he played a lot First Base but that had more to do with the Colabello suspension and Smoak being useless. It's clear they didn't want to go out and make a move at the position because they weren't interested in trading prospects. That's why they went after someone like Melvin Upton to try to add some Outfield depth over a higher profile guy. Plus DHing Bautista as often as they could was probably for the best. I really don't think Edwin will get that number or near it especially the years. Boston could very well choose to go after Beltran to DH. Everyone's assuming they will give Edwin what he wants when offence is not an issue for them. If anybody is going to offer him big money its a team desperately in search of a bat trying to make an impact. Who knows that could be an NL team interested in playing him at First Base. I want him back but if we come out of free agency knowing we have 3 first round picks next June and Atkins plugged in some pretty good veteran pieces for a fraction of the cost. We should all be extremely happy. It's not being cheap. I'd rather the money was spent wisely and not on players who are unlikely to repeat the level of production they have been producing at. I hate the idea of buying decline years. As long as the roster looks good come Spring and a good plan is in place everything is good. Only the worst kind of fan will be crying and complaining that Rogers is cheap. They should spend just not on guys on the wrong side of 30.

BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 So, with everyone advocating giving the biggest relief contract ever to Jansen/Chapman, should we admit that we were maybe too hard on JPR for BJ Ryan? He was unquestionably on that level when Toronto gave him 5/47 after 2005. Then his arm exploded. Maybe. Although it says something when that deal was more than 10 years ago, and no one in MLB has signed a reliever to a 5 year contract since then.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 I cans we 4/90 with team options. This could happen. Maybe Edwin has had some feelers and knows he won't get better. Why not stay home? Would love to sign Edwin for 90/4 even without options but don't think it's happening

Who would you rather have - Cespedes 5 years $125M, EE 4 years $100M or Fowler 4 Years $80M???

Personally would go with Cespedes, I think he's got the potential to add the most wins of the 3 for the next few years, and would likely hit 40+ HR at the RC.

I think I agree. His batting appears consistent now and you'd expect if you left him in RF, he'd be a plus defender. He's also probably the most likely to get unmotivated and fat after cashing in on a long term deal, crash in a car accident while racing and actually be 35 years old right now. He to comes with risk.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Who would you rather have - Cespedes 5 years $125M, EE 4 years $100M or Fowler 4 Years $80M??? It's an interesting question. I'm not convinced Fowler will age well. I'm a little concerned by Cespedes drop in defense and base running this year. I'm not sure if it's age or minor injury related. I'd also love to know if his spike in walk rate is the new norm or not. If it is, and if his defense returns, and if we keep him out of CF, he'd probably provide the most value of any of the people available by a good margin. Eddie's K rate has been creeping up the last few years, and over the last two he's showing less contact and a higher swinging strike rate. That's a little worrying to me when we're talking 25M / year for someone who is almost 34.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 lol there's no way Bautista would sign with the Rangers. Don't be surprised, money talks. Everyone thought there was anger between Price and the Redsox, but 200 million made that anger magically evaporate.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 If not for the Odor incident I could totally see Texas signing Bautista Hard to get past that though

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Did one of the Redsox's current players punch Price in the face? the only animosity between 2015 Red Sox roster players and David Price was David Ortiz.

This is a great question but shouldn't be looked at in isolation. I think it's fairer to say do you want EE and a cheap outfielder, or Cepedes/Fowler and a cheap 1B/DH. I doubt we'll be signing two big contracts guys for both positions.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 the only animosity between 2015 Red Sox roster players and David Price was David Ortiz. The personalities of Bats and Price couldn't be any different either. I like both guys, but they are very different people.
Mittens87 Verified Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Guys s*** talk a lot especially in sports like hockey you just forget about it. Don't know how it would work with face punching, they would have to get over it. Would be funny for the Rangers GM to bring Bautista in and use him to punish the regulars when they strike out too much or make errors. Eg. Bench odor for a week and Bautista plays their position. Probably won't happen though

Bautista will take door #2 for a couple million less 10/10 times over that team.

This rivalry stuff is for the fans. If Texas is the high bidder, he'll happily go and be welcomed with open arms by their fans and players.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Doesn't surprise me. Two or three teams might be willing to bite. That's 5-7 million per too high for a DH in his 30's, I'd max at 20 but rather pay 18, just my opinion. I'm saying this as a huge Edwin fan. I had his back when he was DFA'd and called E-5, if someone wants to pay that, well, have at it.
