BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 I know he's a Ginger and Spanky hates them!!! But, I do have a question and this might be out of the box. Could Justin Turner be had? How much do you see him worth? Platoon him getting most starts at first base and to give JD breaks at 3rd. Would he be a person of interest here? Yeah, this team really needs to invest in a high-end 3B.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Atkins Summary - Bautista and EE will receive qualifying offers. Saunders they are still reviewing, said it's not quite as clear. - Assistant hitting coach Eric Owens let go, said his skill set was redundant, they are looking for an "all encompassing offense coach" to replace him as a staff member, but not necessarily his position. - Thinks they have a strong core of players up the middle returning, and that they are focusing on trying to win next year. Thinks they have built a very strong front office and that they have a chance to compete against the best teams. - Offseason priorities will be filling the holes left by free agents leaving. - Grilli's option is a not brainer and will be picked up. - They want to add "more balance, more platoon advantage and potentially more speed" - They will take advantage of the short negotiating window to re-sign Bautista and EE after the World Series. - Atkins see's a very good amount of players available that fit the mold of a 1B/OF type. - Pillar had a thumb injury, Martin knee injury, Donaldson hip injury. Surgery possible for all, but not a guarantee. - Osuna will remain a reliever. - Biagini could be stretched out as a SP in spring training if he is open to it. - Contract extension has been exlored with John Gibbons and talks went well. - " Looking for back-up catcher who can handle our pitching staff, be a leader, give a productive at-bat" - Atkins feels that Pompey, A.J. Jimenez, "AAA relievers" could be ready to contribute in 2017. - They will look to significantly add to the bullpen in the offseason, rule 5 draft, internal options, or free agents. Would be willing to sign a FA reliever to a 3+ year deal if it was right. - "Bautista could be an effective defensive outfielder for a significant period of time" - Doesn't think the minor league system has enough trade chips to make big trades. - Would be open to trading MLB pitching if it brought back MLB ready talent and depth pieces. (like the Hutch trade) - Unsure right now about innings restrictions for Sanchez next year, and that they will try to do a better job of managing his innings at the beginning of the season rather than the middle to end. Thanks for the excellent summary King. The only thing that I would add is that though Atkins said he was open to trading a starting pitcher for MLB ready talent and depth, he also said it was unlikely (and I think that's important).

King Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Yeah, this team really needs to invest in a high-end 3B. And this too.
King Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Ah, he's a free agent. He wouldn't sign here to play 1B, when he could sign somewhere else to play 3B full time.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I don't think the Dodgers give him up for cheap. He's a free agent, isn't he? Regardless, signing a player coming off what is almost certainly a career year seems like a bad idea.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Question how much of Upton's contract are we paying for 5 mil for next year? Absolutely sweet f*** all i believe.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Nice summary of Atkins presser today by mlbtraderumors.com. Osuna not being stretched out, Biagini might be, and the Jays will look to potentially add “more balance, more platoon advantage and potentially more speed." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Was just reading the above How do we feel about Saunders coming back on a 2/20 or 2/24
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 A guy i am hoping we look at is Angel Pagan. I think he could on a 2 year deal and could be a very good buy low guy. Maybe i am wrong
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 A guy i am hoping we look at is Angel Pagan. I think he could on a 2 year deal and could be a very good buy low guy. Maybe i am wrong I could see him signing for like 1/5 + an option or something and providing close to 2 wins from LF. Would love that signing.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Was just reading the above How do we feel about Saunders coming back on a 2/20 or 2/24 No thanks. We need less strikeout machines in this lineup.

Exactly and there is 2 ways it can go..... If he stays healthy he gets on base a lot and as you said could be a 2 win guy, if he hobbles up your not out much money. I think he provides you more then Saunders and will be cheaper.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I think first half Saunders is closer to what Saunders is overall
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Was just reading the above How do we feel about Saunders coming back on a 2/20 or 2/24 I'd probably do that. Not overly thrilled with the idea but that price seems right to me.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Absolutely sweet f*** all i believe. Oh that's Cool, but can you confirm this? Does anybody know for sure? At Zero dollars would he not be a good trade chip?

If he's cheap - it's a solid value play. Hard to get excited over a guy with a 2.5 WAR ceiling though. He's not a huge OBP guy (.330 career) and it looks like his defense has dropped off too. We need to find the 2009 version of him and sign that guy! Funny thing is we may have that guy in the name of Dalton Pompey.
