Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 They kept showing who was getting warm in the O's bullpen and I became increasingly dumbfounded at the fact that it was never Britton. If he used him for a couple earlier he could have still held back any of his other good relievers for a potential save if he felt the need. I've been wondering though, had we been on the road in Baltimore for this one would Gibby have held Osuna back? I don't think so.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Even if you assume that (theoretically) Gibby goes to Liriano before Osuna in a road game that's a much more defensible decision. Liriano is better than Jimenez and Osuna is not better than Britton. Equivalent decision would have been going to Feldman or someone like that which I can't see Gibby actually doing.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I'll just accept this L. hold thattttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
Waylanderz Verified Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I'm still amazed that Britton didn't come in. It is unreal!
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 It's the sort of decision a guy named Buck makes.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Believe me, you're gonna wanna keep Britton for the save!
admin Site Manager Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 No, if Zach Britton starts out the 11th inning and by some miracle the Blue Jays score a run or someone hits a homerun (same thing), I can guarantee you that no one with half a brain would blame Buck Showalter for using the single biggest asset that he owns in his pitching staff. We're not even comparing using Givens, O'Day or Brad Brach - admittedly excellent relievers in their own right - to not using Britton, but rather UBALDO JIMENEZ, who was dragged out to the extent of having multiple double play opportunities following meatball after meatball, over using one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, who also happens to be maybe the best groundball pitcher of all time. This was an indefensible decision with given arguments that should be a fireable offense on the spot. Agree. We can argue if Jimenez should have come in or not all day, but even if with him in, Buck had a chance to bring in a reliever that has possibly had the best season in the history of baseball, to try and save the game, and he didn't. If anyone in baseball could have got out of that jam, it would have been Britton. And how you even kept him in there for that long when you see absolutely no movement on his pitches, that's another issue. There were three terrible mistakes there. 1. Not using Britton. 2. Not bringing Britton in when you saw Jimenez was throwing batting practice. 3. Not bringing Britton in when your only chance to save yourself is if you bring in Britton.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I had completely forgotten that Showalter had done the same thing back in 1995. But thinking back now, I remember everyone saying that it would be ridiculous to fire him over it. Well guess what... They did fire him and the Yankees went on to win four consecutive World Series!

Key22 Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Buck gave the old school remark that on the road you don't use the closer unless in a save situation. Which probably has a history of making sense because if Britton comes in and goes two and then the O's get the 1 run lead - who comes into save it? Ubaldo - and he gives up three runs and you wind up losing anyway. So that's his old school approach. But like everyone says - you have to look at the do or die game and you know that Toronto is already deep into their pen - they've used Cecil, Grilli and Osuna is out and now they're into Liriano who has control issues. toronto basically used all their best bullets. So you MUST use Britton to start that inning because you know he's a guy who can probably go 2 innings of shut down ball. And with the best Toronto hitters coming up. You shut the top 6 hitters down - then you bring in Ubaldo for the bottom 3. But maybe Baltimore scores. You have to go from a progression of your best to your worst. If Britton goes three and you're forced to bring in Ubaldo and you lose fans can't really get on you. I guess I am somewhat more sympathetic to Buck in that I do sort of understand what Buck was thinking - Ubaldo had a huge second half and he did just throw a 6 2/3 inning 1 hit shutout against Toronto his last time out. The guys was pitching crazy good - so perhaps Buck was thinking pitch the hot hand and I still have Britton to close - where Ubaldo - if he had to close - might falter under that "closer pressure." Gibbons out-managed Showalter. I didn't see that coming.

SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 If the "save" statistic never existed, the idea of "saving" your best pitcher wouldn't be a thing. Managers don't "save" their best starters for later games in a playoff series. They want their starters in as many games, in as many high leverage situations as possible. Your best bullpen guy should be used in a key, high leverage situation, regardless if that situation is in the 7th, 8th or 9th and regardless if you have the lead or are tied or winning.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 The further we get away from the game, the more I find myself kind of pitying Buck Showalter. I never thought I could feel this.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Victim of his own stupidity. I have a rule against pitying people like that at a fundamental level Yeah but it's just so embarrassing for him. I knew he would get skewered in the media, but this is as bad as I've ever seen a coach/manager get shredded. I just feel a bit sorry for him on a human level, to be so publicly shamed like this.
