Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I love Stroman more than most guys, but even I can see his numbers against Baltimore has been disappointing this season. On top of this, Stroman hadn't won a game since aug 14. He's had zero wins, 3 no decisions and 5 loses since that start. Riding a cold hand into an elimination game isn't a good idea. I'd sooner pitch Estrada on short rest. Might I remind you guys he dominated in the playoffs last year when the Jays faced elimination and he's been elite the past three games. He's also amongst League leaders in batting average against, and has a decent SO numbers. Three whole days of rest is generally what most pitchers get in the playoffs. Liriano played well recently and Baltimore sucks against lefties, not by accident. When he doesn't walk people, his stuff is filthy. Exactly ummm...no.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 if Gibby chooses Stroman, I hope the media interrogates Gibby on his rationale. The only rational choice is Liriano.

It is Stroman. The fact that the WC starter will speak to media, they wouldn't throw Liriano out there It's Stroman and it probably came down to Gibby's insistance
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 It's Stroman vs Tillman
Bojangles Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Ross Atkins just announced that it will be Stroman

Mkdaman1818 Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Makes sense, Liriano will be the key lefty out of the pen.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I will bump this thread when Trumbo hits a 3 run bomb off stroshow on a 0-2 fastball.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Stroman vs Orioles this year: 23 IP 33 H 4 BB 12 K 4 HR 12 K They've f***ing massacred him. I love Stroman but this is clearly the wrong move.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Both teams decided against going with the hot hand and instead went with the "better" seasonal pitchers that have been hit hard by the opposing teams recently.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 In big games you want to limit the amount of balls in play. Not throw out the guy who thinks it's better to get a groundout on an 0-2 pitch rather then try to strikeout the hitter. 12ks in 23 innings pitched against O's. That's he number you need to look at. The O's will be making a lot of contact and we will be relying on the babip gods
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 You almost get the feeling that Gibby forced everyone's hand. I can't imagine Shapiro making a decision like this
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Confused by this decision to be honest. You have to win this game at all costs. Liriano gives you a better chance at shutting down the O's lineup over 5-6 innings.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 You almost get the feeling that Gibby forced everyone's hand. I can't imagine Shapiro making a decision like this I hope Gibby just didn't pick Stroman because he's been here longer and pitched well in last years postseason. Who cares about hurting someones feelings at this stage, especially when its a win-or-go-home scenario?

But there is nothing in his outings vs the O's that says otherwise. Not to mention how poor Orioles are vs lefties.

Governator Community Moderator Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I'm just kind of happy we have a reliable back up option to pick up the slack other than Dickey.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Gibby's response of "we'll see what the hell happens" last night just rubbed me the wrong way. I realize that's the way he/it is, but it seems to just reinforce that he is pissing in the wind and hoping it doesn't wind up in his mouth.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I would imagine the conversation went something like this Shapiro: So Ross and I agree that Liriano is the best fit for the game, and gives us the greatest chance to win. Gibby: Stromans our guy, he has done it in the past for us. The team will really get behind him and make plays. Score a lot of run. He will really battle out there. Shapiro: John, Marcus has struggled against the Os this year. You as the manager has the final decision and we will respect it, Gibby: Listen Mark, The team is not going to get behind a starter who joined us at the deadline. They have been battling with Stroman you know, he got the job done in the playoffs last year. He is going to make the Os make weak contact, and the team will play good defense. You ride the horse that got you there, that will battle for you.

Small sample size for Stroman and unregressed splits for the O's are they not? IMO Stroman is the better pitcher he should start. Plus, if they let Stroman face the lineup only twice and then switch to Liriano they'll have to sub out Kim or let him face a lefty, thus neutralizing the only decent pinch hitter they have vs our late inning relievers.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I said all along it was going to be Stroman, if we had to use Sanchez in game 162.

At least he didn't say we might show up in dresses or something off the wall.

Four starts in a season is a big enough sample size for me to know I don't want to see a fifth outing.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Four starts in a season is a big enough sample size for me to know I don't want to see a fifth outing. 4 starts is incredibly small. I'm surprised to hear you say otherwise actually.
youngtea Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 So the last game of the season depends on the decision making of Gibby (the worst manager in the league).
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Stroman's last 5 starts vs Balt: 7.0 Innings, 4 ERs (Sept '16) 3.2 Innings, 7 ERs (June '16) 5.1 Innings, 4 ERs (June '16) 7.0 Innings, 3 ERs (April '16) 8.0 Innings, 1 ER (Sept '15)

Baltimore clearly should be a worse team against lefties, but shouldn't be as big splits as they were this year. Can't trust that Trumbo going to keep running a .600 OPS against lefties. This way you know that Kim will be facing a lefty late in the game, so force their hand.
