I'd say he's probably one of the most likely. If Gausman can't go, they should do this. Even if Gausman can go, they should tell him he has 4-5 innings and then the pen is taking over.

That pen is too good to not use it in a one game do or die

Hopefully we and the other WC conteders can keep pressure on Showalter to keep using all those guys over the last 6 regular season games

And Girardi might not let the Yankees mail it in against them on the weekend even though they will have been eliminated

Someone just brought this up in a FG chat, but the Orioles are probably a lot more dangerous if they turn the WC into a bullpen game. Something like:

Bundy - 2-3 innings
Givens - 1-2 innings
Brach - 1-2 innings
O'Day - 1-2 innings

And then Britton 2 innings to close it out. That would be very, very tough.

Yeah I would not want to face that at all. The Tigers don't look like a good option to face either. Verlander and/or Fulmer are set up pretty well to pitch the WC game. Their lineup is pretty good, although right handed heavy so Sanchez could be a good option against them.

Girardi will be trying hard to win those games. He'll want to push his win total up this year as much as he can so he can say he fielded a competitive team with the young players.

I don't think we are going to experiment that in the WC game. Remember Dickey in extras when we had other options last week?

The Tigers are scary. I'm sure they'll set up so Verlander goes, and he might be the best pitcher in the AL (again). RH heavy lineup is a nice matchup for Sanchez, but Cabrera, Kinsler, and the Martnez's is a lot of lumber.

Yeah and it's an unwritten rule in baseball that if you're out of it, you field as competitive a roster as possible against teams that are still in it. You only get cute against teams that are also out of it.

Seems like the best way to compete against a bullpen start from the O's would be to piggy back starters. No third time through the lineup for anyone.

Not that I would consider putting Dickey on the playoff squad, but that inning was JD's fault. Dickey got a grounder that was thrown away, a bunt attempt that went south defensively at 3rd, and a lazy (sac) fly to left. Totally wasn't on his head.

Well they better figure something out because right now I dont have alot of confidence in our bullpen and 6 innings of Brach, Oday and Britton is scary.

I think I agree. A bullpen game from the O's could be scary but facing Verlander and the Tigers lineup would be no better.

The Orioles have a stacked pen, but the Tigers have an even more stacked lineup. Verlander is a lot better than Tillman or Gausman, so I suppose I'd still rather face Baltimore.

Verlander is a K machine and we strike out alot.

Hopefully the Tigers will be forced to use Verlander on Sunday and the Os forced to use their bullpen heavily on the weekend.

The Tigers are scary. I'm sure they'll set up so Verlander goes, and he might be the best pitcher in the AL (again). RH heavy lineup is a nice matchup for Sanchez, but Cabrera, Kinsler, and the Martnez's is a lot of lumber.

So based on what I posted above:

- Sanchez is the best of the five first time through the order and as good as anyone second or third time through.

- Happ has a pronounced dropoff third time through and somewhat counter-intuitively should have a short leash in those situations.

- Recent counter examples aside, Estrada doesn't really drop off second or third time through.

- Stroman really shouldn't see a lineup three times.

- Liriano shouldn't either and really probably shouldn't be starting in a high leverage game.

If they are throwing Tillman we might score enough to win in the 1st inning and you can all relax a bit. I really wouldn't change our recipe, score early, hope our Sanchez goes 6 or 7 1 run ball, use Cecil/Grilli/Osuna to close out who will likely all be on minimum 2 days rest and jacked for the game. Yes if Sanchez blows early like 3 innings in of course use another starter as the long arm but to assume he's going to roll over the 3rd time through when he really hasn't all year seems like an odd way to look at it.

I'm not convinced Stroman is preferrable to a reliever. Happ or Estrada might be. Mostly I'd say that what I posted confirms that Sanchez is the right guy and can be trusted deep into the game. Piggy-back should be thought of a more of an insurance policy than a strategy. The only starter who seems to have lights out reliever potential is Sanchez himself. Hurl's plan makes a lot of sense.

I've pretty much talked myself out of the piggyback. Sanchez + as few relievers as possible should be plan A. By then, Liriano will have made his last start and be the mopup guy going forward and as a LHP he's not even a bad option if it's the Orioles though Orioles or not if it comes down to Francisco, it means things have gone very poorly and the team might be f***ed regardless.

Or maybe wait a few hours to see who Gibbons picks. Liriano would be my preference out of him, Stroman and Estrada assuming Happ is out as well.

He is having a great end to the season

Orioles suck against LHP

He has experience ( so does Stroman here i suppose)

It would be a huge mistake to start Stroman over him.
