Joe Carter is easily the most overrated Blue Jay of all time. He barely had more WAR as a Jay than Colby Rasmus. Overrated hitter; god awful defensively. You hit one timely home run and you're a god forever, I guess.

It was a really big homerun. It's irrelevant how people look at him. All that matters is the World Series.

meh - I was a big Carter fan before he hit that HR. HR's and RBI's were the shiiiznet when I was 10 years old.

Olerud is....it's right in your handle man. WAMCO

Nope! Alfredo griffin entered as a pinch runner for olerud . Could have been a different series

Sure, he wasn't that great of a player as he has been made out to be by the Canadian media or what casual Blue Jays fans think, though that home run was huge and won them the World Series in 93. It was one of the greatest moments in this franchise.

It's crazy how different things were back then.

Joe Carter was third in MVP voting. Mark McGwire fourth.

Even if you don't use advanced stats,

Carter: .264/.309 34HR 119RBI

McGwire: .268/.385 42HR 104RBI

McGwire 6.3WAR Carter 2.9WAR

Of course it helped they won the WS, but Oakland was a good team as well.

Is there a chance, in todays game, Olerud with an 8 WAR sits to get Carter at 1B? I don't think so. Even with older school managers.

It's not really robbing Peter to pay Paul if we keep our offense strong. Offense is exponential, pitching is not.

Ironic that we were talking about Vin Sully today...I didn't know Vin was calling the 93 WSP game on CBS radio when Carter hit the home run

Don't they do awards voting after the season but before the playoffs?

I'm not sure how they did it back then, I just assumed it was after, as that was the only reason I could see them voting for Carter over McGwire.

Joe Carter is a wonderful person too, easily one of the most likeable Jays ever. The HR means a lot, but that's part of it too.

Tough to take votes away from MVP Eck!

"Back then" in the olden days ... it was the same. Voting was done prior to playoffs.

Things were just viewed differently back then, prior to people understanding numbers like they do today.

Carter was the primary run producer on a prolific offense, I believe 3rd in the AL in RBIs, and that stat carried a lot more weight back then in the eyes of voters. Almost like RBIs were a sign of how clutch you were.

Yaay. Glad we're not gonna be one of those homophobic sites.

Keep the similes between bad trades and getting raped coming though. Perfectly OK.

Is "no homo" being policed now? Jesus Christ, it's just a tongue in cheek comment.

I like Votto but his comments earlier this year would give me pause in a sernario where the Jays give up a young pitcher with years of control coming off a good season.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/joey-votto-says-he-would-retire-rather-than-stick-around-and-play-poorly/

“It’s not something I’m OK with. I’d rather quit and leave all the money on the table than play at a poor level,” Votto said before Sunday’s game against the Pirates. “I’m here to play and be part of setting a standard. It’s something I’ve always taken pride in. I love to play at a really high level. So far this year, it’s not been that. I will not be a very satisfied, happy person if I don’t perform at the level that I expect.”

...

“I signed up for a high-level of performance. I didn’t sign up for this just to make money,” Votto said. “It’s great and I don’t take it for granted. I appreciate every dime that comes my way. I just care a great deal — desperately. I refuse to accept my peak has past, I refuse to accept that my best days are in the past. I’m not there yet. I just don’t see that, I don’t feel that.”

I'm all for not reading into this stuff, but if you're going to, these comment seem only positive.

I was a little surprised to look up the active wOBA leaders and see Bottom at the top ahead of Trout and Miggy.
