Just more justification for a limit on term of contracts or size of contracts or cap space.

lol, no one forces the owners to give out these huge contracts. Its part of the risk they knowingly take on.

It's true but I'm sure the league doesn't like it when a whole market is going to the toilet because a team took too much risk and is now unable to compete financially.

But then again, I'm against bailouts so they should suck it and serve as an example for what not to do so teams don't hand out large contracts like that.

Imagine if something similar happens to some of the contracts the Nationals handed out, they are screwed for the next 20 years.

Jeter, Arod, Ortiz, Fielder.. we really are saying goodbye to an era and entering a new one..

Was just thinking that. Remeber watching them growing up and now their all gone. Crazy.

There's literally a decade of age difference between those guys and Fielder, unless you mean his father of course.

Probably because he's only a year and a half younger than Fielder.

lol was actually debating it but Trout, Harper and Gincarlo have legitimate chances to break records and will over shadow JD when everything is said and done.

JD started late.

I think he's talking about HOF type guys.

JD is great...but I think he's going to decline before he gets to HOF kind of career numbers.

If he has another couple 7 win seasons in a row after this year I would say he has a good shot. The last 4 years he's been by far the best player in baseball outside of Trout. I think being such an elite player for a short peak should be worth a lot even if his career isn't as long.

If he can play like Beltre has into his late 30's, then he has a good shot. That's why I'd feel more comfortable with the Jays giving Donaldson a long term contract vs. EE or Bautista.

I did. I asked Santa for him and Yu Darvish that December.

I wanted Fielder on a 5 year deal

(obviously that was never going to happen. Tigers shocked everyone except Boras by giving him 9)

Donaldson plays injured a lot. I just can't see him being able to keep it up. He's a beast but aging and playing through injuries don't usually work.

If he has another 6 excellent seasons similar to what he's had with the Jays, his career isn't far off Scott Rolen's. And I haven't heard any media or writers who think Rolen's going to the Hall. Even though he should be.

Didn't realize Rolen had more fWAR in 2004 than Edmonds or Pujols. That 2004 Cards team was stacked.

Isn't he widely regarded as one of the best defensive 3B of all time? With some pretty impressive career numbers and accomplishments, I think he has a good shot at making it into the hall.

I'm skeptical... Third Baseman have a really tough time making the Hall. As corner infielders, they get lumped in with the other offensive positions and the bar tends to get set higher than it should be considering their defensive value. At 300 homeruns and 2000 hits, he's well short of the offensive threshold that would guarantee entry. For him to get in, the voting pool has to evolve to to be more in line with modern valuations. Obviously that's already happening to some extent but it's a slow process of turnover that's bound to be somewhat behind on the times.

Needing 6 more excellent seasons is extremely difficult.
