reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Who's winning the MVP race? Donaldson is the clear favourite IMO. Altuve is probably a close second and might get the nod. Other players who could win with a hot 2 months: Machado Trout Betts Bogaerts
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 I don't think Donaldson is the clear favorite anymore. If the Astros make the playoffs. Altuve wins in a landslide.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Altuve is having a great year, but he's still a fair bit behind Donaldson and Trout despite a career high BABIP. It would be a real slap in the face to those two if things stay the same and he wins.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Wouldn't count out Ortiz. We know how the voters will react to it being his last season and stuff, I'm sure he'll get a good chunk of votes. Though I think it's between Donaldson, and Altuve. If the Astros don't make the postseason, that will be taken into consideration. Trout should be in the conversation as well, though only with 21 HR's and playing on a losing team, the voters won't give him much acknowledgement.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Altuve, Papi or Donaldson Papi is the loved one for the voters

You know what... that's a good point, Ortiz does have an outside shot for sure. You could definitely make a fair case for him especially if they win the division.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Should be MVP race: Trout Donaldson Altuve Actual MVP race: Altuve Donaldson Trout
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Someone suggested here they should have an MVP and a Player of the Year which I agree with. Considering MVP highly relates to overall team performance and the best players in the league don't always get the recognition they deserve. That said, I think voters love batting champs as well and Altuve wins it if Houston is in the postseason and the two remain close in WAR.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Should be MVP race: Trout Donaldson Altuve Actual MVP race: Altuve Donaldson Trout Trout can win the Hank Aaron Award and Silver Slugger. Save the MVP's with players whose team aren't in the cellar.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Ortiz will likely finish around 4th-5th and ahead of Betts. No one should expect anything less
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Altuve Donaldson Trout Ortiz In that order

Too many awards make the awards worth less Look at the NHL they have like 5 awards for forwards
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Trout should his second. Really he should have 4

MVP should be most valuable player on any team. So if a team could take any player for that year who would it be? Clearly its Trout.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Depends on if the Jays make the playoffs and what JD does there. Their WAR numbers are very close but Trout is better by a bit.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 If the Orioles win AL East it should be Machado hands down
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 something something WAR's error bars are not precise enough / meant for an MVP race
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 something something WAR's error bars are not precise enough / meant for an MVP race I agree but it's a pretty good start. Not sure if they're included in WAR but OPS+, RC+ are also nice stats to look at.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 voting is before the postseason starts Damn, really? I'm dumn. Well I say it depends if the Jays make the playoffs then. I think that would give JD a considerable advantage, especially if we win the AL East.

Offensive component of WAR is wRC+ by playing time Imo Cyborg is gonna be dumn and complain when Altuve wins cause Trout had 0.000613252696969696969 WAR more than him

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Trout can win the Hank Aaron Award and Silver Slugger. Save the MVP's with players whose team aren't in the cellar. Agree. Trout signed Lincecum, Weaver and CJ Wilson
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I've said it before, I've said it again...MVP is such an ambiguous term. Everyone seems to have different criteria for what they think it should encapsulate, so how can you really grade it properly. Is it the most dominant player that year...does team success have something to do with it? Personally...I think it should be called, TBP (The Best Player). Forget how the team did. Who had the most dominant statistical season. Period. A dominant player shouldn't be penalized because his team doesn't have what it takes. If you want to award players on great teams then create an award for ensemble cast.
Nafro Verified Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Agree. Trout signed Lincecum, Weaver and CJ Wilson Actually Seattle's GM signed Weaver and Wilson. Though the Angel's GM did trade for Ricky Nolasco!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 A team that does not make the playoffs has no value and thus cannot have a most valuable player.

I think most people came to terms a long time ago that team success should not matter except the dinosaur voters a few people that hate change.
