King Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 It's time to give this guy a shot. He's posted elite numbers as a reliever at every level of the minor leagues. 26 years old, and probably better than the Tepera/Venditte/Antolin etc. spinning wheel of s*** bags we've been rotating through this year. http://i.imgur.com/4tfnNUW.png http://i.imgur.com/CrFF8MV.png He also projects by Steamer as a very good reliever right now.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Only 6 saves last 2 year. He kinds suxx
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Jesus he has a ridiculously low babip this year at both levels
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 What kind of velocity does he have?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 What kind of velocity does he have? Old scouting report from 4 years ago has him sitting low 90's, T94. Low 80's slider to righties. Low 80's changeup to lefties.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 A+ thread King!! This dude is as elite as MiLB relievers can be. Might as well give him a look. Maybe he could become a great 3rd option for us behind Grilli and Osuna? His peripherals certainly suggest reason to buy in.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Just reposting something I put in another thread. I hold little faith in the ability of a guy who was never even good enough to be tried as a starter in the minors... ever. 3 career starts in the minors in 7 seasons. That being said, he may have made changes this season as his walk rate has plummeted from his previously consistent 7 to 8% to a mere 2 -3 %, while bumping his K rate up from 28% to 36% even while jumping up a level, though his AAA sample size is still very small and he's probably still benefitting from seeing hitters for the first time.

Give him low leverage situations to see what he can do and then go from there. If he sucks then send him back to Buffalo and it's nothing lost. If he's good then it's a massive win. There isn't really a risk in giving him a chance, only upside.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Seriously, what gives you the right to make this a thread? Do you think you're better than everyone else around here? Banish this to the general BJ discussion please mods.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 At this point, the pen is so s*** he's worth a shot. It's literally a zero risk all reward gamble.

His peripherals aren't even THAT great for a AAA reliever. Barely over 9 K/9, >3 BB/9, 2.97 FIP. Barnes shits on those numbers easily.

He's not the only one either. Ben Rowen could be useful with his extreme ground ball rates. Dermody might be a useful LOOGY (although we have a few of those guys, like Girodo and Loup). There's probably more.. but those 2 come to mind off the top of my head.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 The numbers for Barnes are stellar, but Shapiro obviously sees something to suggest that he won't succeed at the major league level. Every team has a guy or two like this and they are rarely any good. RJ Swindle comes to mind. In the absence of a more detailed scouting report and experience watching Barnes, I'll just trust that they know that they are doing

He could very easily be in their plans for a callup within the next couple months. Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it never will. Just to say though, you are right he could very well be a s*** bag like Tepera. Just based off of his steamer projections and minor league numbers/swinging strike%, the upside is worth giving him a chance. Never know unless you try.

I just fail to understand why they would hold back Barnes in favour of mediocre pitchers when we're trying to win. If they thought he could put up the ratios that steamer predicts, he certainly wouldn't be in AAA (excepting off field issues). That being said, I do agree with your second paragraph. I'm just not too upset that they haven't done it yet.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 It kind of seems to me like we are moving pieces into position to make the pen in the next year that could be longer term options in Barnes, Demody and Mayza.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Exaggeration, but there's a good chance he wouldn't be the team's worst reliever.

I'm legitimately curious to know if he has changed anything like arm slot, delivery, found a new pitch etc...something to explain a microscopic babip and 95% stand rate seemingly out if nowhere.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 The only reason I can see is that it's a 40 man roster issue.... But then again they can just DFA Teperia off the 40 man. Maybe they know about him and they want to move a piece like Shultz or something at the deadline before making changes to the 40 man? I can't think of anything else

He's the type of player you get cash considerations or a PTBNL in return.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 26, 2016 Posted July 26, 2016 Who's going to get removed from the 25 man roster when Goins comes off of the DL? Tepera or another reliever? Or maybe it'll depend on what kind of transactions take place in the next few days.

Exactly, not the first time the FO will trade a guy to get cash relief to balance out the budget, and depending on how much we pay Upton well.. DFA Brady Dragmire Sure! Who is he anyways lmao

Does Carerra have options?
