Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 David Ortiz's public comments on his preferred replacement may have gotten him in a bit of trouble with Major League Baseball. The league is reportedly expected to look into the Boston Red Sox slugger's post-All-Star Game comments where he openly lobbied for Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion to join the Red Sox next season for possible tampering, according to Sportsnet 590 The Fan's Jeff Blair. "The Red Sox know also they need to bring a force in the middle of the lineup (after I retire),'' the 40-year-old told reporters on Tuesday. "And sorry, Blue Jays, but who better than Encarnacion to do that?'' Players are subject to discipline if they violate baseball's tampering rules just like team executives, Blair noted. Ortiz also suggested the Red Sox acquire Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Does it mean we get a player back in return for tampering with our chances of resigning EE?
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Good. Ortiz is taking way too much. That question he answered at the beginning is fine, you suggest someone it's cool it's his opinion. But that s*** at the all-star game, Ortiz repetidly talking up EE, even the NESN media interviewed EE about going to Boston. This is bush league, when was the last time you heard a media outlet approach a player about replacing a superstar, even about going to the specific organization the media outlet represents.... Before his contract runs out????? This has been beyond weird.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Does it mean we get a player back in return for tampering with our chances of resigning EE? Blair was thinking on the lines of them losing a draft pick or getting fined
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Good. Though I don't see how the Red Sox can be punished for something one of their players did.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Does it mean we get a player back in return for tampering with our chances of resigning EE? As punishment Ortiz has to play the rest of the season with Toronto...then he finds out he loves the place and convinces EE to stay.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Blair was thinking on the lines of them losing a draft pick or getting fined I would be surprised if they lost a draft pick. Ortiz will probably be fined, pocket change.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want. No they can't. He will be fined.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want. Unless it's Red Sox players then they can all go f*** themselves unless it's them admitting that the Jays are the better team.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want. I would be ok with him saying whatever, but for me what ticked me off is when the Boston media approached him. That can't happen. I don't want our player to be distracted, I don't want a Farrell 2.0. If this distraction was a result of Ortiz talking too much, then the league should take care of this. I agree that this has 0 effect on him choosing Boston or Toronto or whatever, but it's the distraction from a rival in the midst of a title race is what ticks me off.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want. When he first said it i thought that was tampering. Then thinking about it i thought i didn't matter since he was a player and not an office personnel. I don't know what the rule is technically so i don't know.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Any investigation into said comments is almost certainly at the behest of the Blue Jays, and rightly so.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 This is silly. Players can say whatever they want. That's my opinion. Is that MLB policy though? He should be punished on those grounds alone. Still doesn't change that they can already be having dinner and talking about where to get the best condo. But frankly, who among any of us hasn't had a conversation about leaving our current place of employment for another gig?

Players are not exempt from tampering rules according to Blair. I haven't double checked the rulebook tbh but if that's the case then he should be hit with something.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 this is just more proof that the all star break sucks and that live baseball needs to be back on TV.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I hope the Red Sox lose something worthwhile because of this. Ortiz knew exactly what he was doing, he just doesn't give a s*** because it's his last hurrah. He's basically testing the MLB's limits. I would take offense to that and they should too.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Resigning him or not what's it gonna take money wise to get him?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Resigning him or not what's it gonna take money wise to get him? Realistically, AAV around $20M and 3-4 years.

Maybe they will be forced to trade for Mike Aviles and have to give him to us again.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Me too. Maybe they will be forced to trade for Mike Aviles and have to give him to us again. Farrell as third base coach for the next decade, seeing managers come and managers go but still only ever allowed to wave the odd runner home.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Realistically, AAV around $20M and 3-4 years. I'd easily take the over on that. There's always going to be GM's who see a elite hitter, don't have job security and see a very easy way to add easy wins to their team. Past 3 years Edwin has near identical stats as Stanton
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Realistically, AAV around $20M and 3-4 years. That's it???? No way, I'd take 3/60M or maybe 4/80M I would take in a heart beat.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Me too. Maybe they will be forced to trade for Mike Aviles and have to give him to us again. We sure could use a little Eshmil Rogers in our lives.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 We sure could use a little Eshmil Rogers in our lives. Thank f***ing god I don't have to listen to Buck butcher that name any more.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Here's the truth.... Players, agents, GM's, coaches, managers.....anyone....ANYONE...can say whatever they want to anyone. They can...AND DO try to convince each other to sign here, there, wherever...GM's are always talking to agents and dropping hints, ideas, talking numbers. That happens. There is no doubt. And no one gives a s***...unless the media gets wind of it. If you can keep it on the down low, you're fine. Ortiz's only mistake was saying it in front of the wrong people. It's the same as players having deals all lined up before the draft or the IFA signing period. It's all worked out way beforehand in many cases. Edwin knows what teams would be interested in him and has a range of salaries that he can expect from each given team. At least as a general framework. That changes based on performance, supply and demand (who signs where, and who's left desperate). Ortiz saying that he thinks EE would be a great replacement for him is not news...to anyone. I'm sure he mentioned this to Edwin 3 years ago in private.

At least Toronto's are just harmlessly stupid, but the guys in Boston are huge homers, extremely rough on their own players, gossipy, and they love to tamper with other teams.
