Because they're clearly struggling to generate runs without Joey's 0.8 WAR in the lineup. Jays will resign Edwin, get much better D in RF than Joey and get a nice draft pick when he walks. There's no reason the Jays can't compete in 2017.

Don't be dumn.

Sure they will compete. Like they did from 1995 to 2014.

Different team and different times. But sure whatever you say

Free Agents:

EE

Bautista

Saunders

Dickey

Storen

Grilli

Chavez

Smoak

Cecil

Morales

Barney

Floyd

Thole

The only guys on the farm that could contribute in 2017 are Hutch and Pompey.

So to fill out the roster, Jays either make trades or sign FA, mostly the latter. Trouble is, 80% of free agents are players deep into their decline years.

Shatkins will be very hard pressed to field a WS contender beyond this year.

He's really been amazing defensively since coming back from the DL as well.

That play in the 9th tonight was pretty slick

You don't think this FO can manage to sign and use the excess money coming off the book for some of these players? Your point is vague, and can't we enjoy this season, Jim.

Of course we can. This is BJMB though, strategy for the future is always up for debate. This particular debate evolved from BTS's suggestion to trade Tulo in the offseason if he has a reasonable season. Which I agree with for the reasons given. Old players will only give you so much before the clock runs out - look at the Yanks.

Look at them, they've done a great job rebuilding there farm, over time. There's no sense talking about the off-season when we're in a battle for the Pennant. Well, at least not in this f***ing thread.

Everyone should be in favour of trading Tulo. That's not a contract you want. The baffling thing is people think it will be Goins who replaces him. Not like we couldn't get another SS to replace him in the off-season or anything. Him doing well is good for everybody. For us and the potential to trade him as well.

Jim, you should be an economist or political analyst or something because you like to say a high volume of s*** to try to fear monger your point across to others but you're actually saying nothing.

You list 13 guys hitting free agency which at first glance one would say "holy s***, Jim is right, this team is toast in 2017 there's no way they can replace ALL those players".

But let's take a look at this list.

Morales and Floyd aren't even active on this roster, and Thole shouldn't be. That takes us down to 10. As someone else pointed out already, Grilli is incorrectly on this list. That's 9. Even mentioning these 4 guys on the same list that starts with EE is very disingenuous.

Chavez, Cecil, Storen, Barney and Smoak are relatively replaceable players or can be resigned for a reasonable price. Now we're down to 4.

Dickey may or may not be back with this team. If he's back then great, if not, then let Hutchison replace him and bank the $10 million to try to re-sign someone else. Even if Hutchison is a lesser pitcher than Dickey (which is debatable) Hutch + a catcher with a pulse > Dickey + Thole.

So we're left with three - Encarnacion, Bautista and Saunders. Now losing all three of them along with Smoak would be a pain in the ass only because the team would have to replace four corner OF/1B/DH spots. But replacing any one of them is not too difficult. The team is locked at all the scarce positions - C, CF, 2B, SS, 3B - unless BTS get his way plus the starting rotation is solid and Osuna will be in there either as another starter or the closer. Resign one of those three guys and find two other 105 RC+ guys to fill in the two remaining spots and this team still has a far above average lineup (with possibly better defense) even if it's not quite as potent as today plus a cheap if not spectacular starting staff. That's the building block of a .500 team on the fringes of contention plus we don't know what Shapiro or Atkins would have up their sleeves to improve that roster. The 2017 Blue Jays will still be an envy to many teams even if its in "rebuilding" mode as the front office tries to restock the farm.

Thank god your not the GM.

yeah easily can replace a SS of Tulo's calibre. They are always available. Oh wait a second.

For the right return, I'd trade my mom. Gotta be reasonable. Nobody's saying trade Tulo for Goins Jr and a handy from Spanky (trust me, that's a great handy!), just be smart with your assets!

I never said we would easily replace him with a player of his caliber. Where did I say that? Certainly we can replace him with someone above replacement level thats where I would aim to start. I don't like paying players top dollars for their decline years its not a good investment. If you can get yourself out of that contract and get value back you have to explore it.

I don't understand why people do this. Just assume the absolute worst. I don't hate Tulo... I hate the contract. Think what you want though I don't give a s*** lol.

The point is if some guy on BJMB hates the contract, most MLB teams are going to too.

Prefacing every trade player X argument with "if we get good value back" is so tiresome. Obviously you trade anybody if you get good value back, that's not rocket science.

I understand that. I simply said explore the option. I'm pretty sure Tulo has to agree to any trade scenario we work out anyway. He had a no movement clause that kicked in.

As long as he's healthy we got a pretty damn good SS for the time being. Watching him play defense is pure joy.

BBref says Barney has one more year of arb after this one, so I think he's still under team control after 2016. Not a game changer or anything, but as a utility infielder, he's a good guy to have around.

See bolded part above. You are supporting my argument. With the Jays getting old and the potential for a WS dropping significantly after this year, why would you not move Tulo and his at least $78M in salary until 2021 if you have the chance.

Following baseball religiously since 1975 and know exactly where the Jays are headed after this year.

Will have to agree to disagree and next year I'll say "I told you so", yet again.
