Tony Sanchez

The Bisons fell 5-4 in an extra-inning contest with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday. Buffalo was walked-off in the first game of a four-game set from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, IronPigs' right fielder Cedric Hunter shot a double into right field, past a diving Junior Lake, scoring Cam Perkins for the winning run.

With Chris Leroux starting for the Herd, Lehigh Valley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Catcher Logan Moore brought home Cam Perkins with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield. A Leroux balk later in the inning did not come back to haunt the Herd, as the righty starter ended the inning allowing just one run.

Lehigh Valley starter Ben Lively began strong, retiring the first seven hitters. Buffalo's first hit of the contest came on a game-tying solo home run from catcher Tony Sanchez in the top of the third inning. Sanchez's blast is his third of the season.

Sanchez gave the Herd the lead in the fifth. With runners one out and runners on second and third, he plated Junior Lake with a run-scoring groundout to shortstop. Jio Mier then connected with a two run home run off Lively, his first of the year, to make it a 4-1 game.

A double, fielder's choice, infield single, and throwing error put runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth for the IronPigs. Leroux escaped danger, picking up his seventh strikeout by punching out J.P. Crawford.

Lively avoided mayhem himself in the top of the sixth, getting Casey Kotchman to bounce into an inning-ending double play with runners on second and third.

Brock Stassi, Lehigh Valley's designated hitter, tied the game at four with three run home run off Leroux in the sixth. Stassi now has 10 RBI in his last six ballgames.

Leroux left after 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs, while picking up seven strikeouts, his second-most of the season. Lively finished with a line of 7.1 innings, four earned runs, five hits allowed, and two strikeouts for Lehigh Valley.

Aaron Loup, in his first appearance with Buffalo since being sent down from Toronto on June 15, retired all four batters he faced in relief, striking out two. Ben Rowen entered for the bottom of the eighth, sending the game into extra innings with a one-two-three ninth inning. Rowen pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.

Buffalo's Chad Jenkins struck out Max Stassi to begin the bottom of the 11th, but yielded a single to Cam Perkins, followed up by Cedric Hunter's walk off double.

The Bisons made two noteworthy defensive gems in the game.

To end the bottom of the third, Bisons' second baseman David Adams made a diving grab in centerfield on a ball hit by Nick Williams. Adams stretched out, avoiding the oncoming centerfielder Dalton Pompey, who jumped over Adams to prevent a collision.

With Rowen on the mound for the Herd in the eighth, Domonic Brown robbed Nick Williams of a go-ahead home run, leaping at the left field wall to make the catch to keep the game tied.

The Bisons and IronPigs have a double-header on Saturday, with game one set for 12:05 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park. Drew Hutchison will take the mound for the Herd in the first game, and is scheduled to be opposed by James Russell.

BISONS NOTES:

Starter Scott Diamond has been activated to the Bisons' roster, and lefty reliever Colt Hynes has rejoined the Herd from Double-A New Hampshire. Diamond pitched one game with the Blue Jays on June 13, and Hynes pitched in 13 games with the Fisher Cats, having pitched seven games with Buffalo earlier this season. Catcher Luis Hurtado has been placed on the disabled list… David Adams picked up a ground rule double in the fifth inning, extending his hitting streak to nine games… The last six hitters in the Bisons' lineup all had at least one hit, with the eight and nine hitters driving in a pair of runs each… Chad Jenkins has now allowed earned runs out of the bullpen in six of his last seven appearances… Ben Rowen pitched three scoreless innings for the Bisons on Friday. He has not allowed an earned run since May 4, a string of 14-straight games… Friday was the Herd's first extra inning game since May 30, when they lost to Columbus in 12 innings.

Dwight Smith Jr.

AKRON - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats couldn't hold on to an early lead and fell victim to a big inning early on, losing 7-2 to the Akron RubberDucks Friday night at Canal Park in Akron.

The Fisher Cats (29-37) fell to 1-3 on their longest road trip of the season, and gave up a big five-run second inning to surrender an early lead. The RubberDucks (39-29) snapped an extended cold stretch, breaking out of a 12-game skid. Dwight Smith, Jr. extended his hitting streak to 14 games and his on-base streak to 23 games, both season highs for any Fisher Cats player.

New Hampshire opened the scoring in the top of the first against Akron starter Michael Peoples (W, 6-2). Jason Leblebijian dropped a flare into shallow right field for a one-out single. Dwight Smith, Jr. smashed an RBI triple to center field, scoring Leblebijian and giving New Hampshire the 1-0 edge. They doubled that advantage in the top of the second, with Matt Dean doubling to lead off the frame. After a fly out to right that advanced Dean to third base, Christian Lopes lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Dean and double the lead to 2-0.

The RubberDucks exploded in the bottom of the second against Fisher Cats starter Shane Dawson (L, 4-4), who walked leadoff man Nellie Rodriguez. Jeremy Lucas bounced back to the mound, and Rodriguez reached second on the groundout. Joe Sever and Mike Papi smashed back-to-back RBI doubles for Akron, and Alex Monsalve hit an infield single that put runners at first and second. Ivan Castillo bounced back to the mound, but Jorge Flores dropped Dawson's throw to second, loading the bases. Dawson then walked Todd Hankins and Bradley Zimmer, bringing in runs both times. Chris Smith came in for New Hampshire, and Clint Frazier lifted a sacrifice fly to center fielder Melky Mesa, scoring Castillo and making it 5-2 Akron.

New Hampshire edged closer in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Lavarnway worked a leadoff walk and Dean singled him to second base. Shane Opitz also singled, loading up the bases for Christian Lopes. The second baseman punched a single up the middle to score Lavarnway. With the bases still loaded, Flores hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Dean to trim the lead to 5-4.

Akron answered in the bottom of the fifth against Fisher Cats reliever Brady Dragmire. Lucas doubled to lead off the inning, and with two outs, Castillo singled him home. In the sixth inning, Zimmer led off with a single, swiped second, and came home on a two-out single by Sever to extend the lead to 7-4 for Akron. New Hampshire brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Nick Maronde (S, 1) got pinch hitter Rowdy Tellez to ground out to end the game.

Dawson took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Chris Smith gave up two hits against one strikeout in 2.2 shutout frames of relief. Dragmire gave up two runs on four hits and three walks in two innings; he whiffed one. John Stilson threw two scoreless frames with one strikeout and one walk.

The Fisher Cats will try to right the ship Saturday night , with righty Luis Santos starting for New Hampshire against Akron righty Nick Pasquale. First pitch from Canal Park is at 7:05 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.

LANSING, Mich. - Behind a five-run third-inning rally and the pitching of Fernando Perez and Jon Maciel, the West Michigan Whitecaps (39-26) shut out the Lansing Lugnuts (34-34), 7-0, on Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Whitecaps narrowed their magic number to 1 to clinch a first-half playoff berth.

Following a leadoff walk and a one-out HBP in the third inning, the 'Caps strung together four consecutive singles against Lugnuts starter Tom Robson (Loss, 0-1), keyed by a two-run single by designated hitter Will Allen, to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

David Gonzalez added an RBI single in the fourth inning off Robson, and Derek Hill's sixth-inning sacrifice fly against reliever Josh DeGraaf capped the scoring.

West Michigan's pitchers handled the rest.

22-year-old Fernando Perez (Win, 2-2) limited the Lugnuts' offense to the tune of two base runners in six innings - a Justin Atkinson single in the second inning, and a Jake Thomas single in the third.

Jon Maciel (Save, 1) pitched the final three innings, working around Max Pentecost's leadoff double in the seventh and an Andrew Guillotte two-out double in the eighth.

Two more games remain in the first half of the Midwest League season: a Purrfect Night featuring Cat Videos on Saturday, with LAFCU Fireworks following the 7:05 p.m. game, and a special Father's Day edition of Kids Day presented by Delta Dental on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.: Play catch on the field with your dad from 1:00-1:30, and Kids Run the Bases after the game!

Saturday's game sees the added bonus of All-Star right-hander Jon Harris (5-1, 2.30) on the mound for the Lugnuts, opposed by Whitecaps right-hander Sandy Baez (2-6, 3.25). Gates open at 6:00 p.m.

Kings 3 Stars of the Night

1) Justin Maese: Maese was dominant in his first start above the complex leagues going 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and 6 groundball outs.

2) Jose Dominguez: Dominguez was also dominant nearly matching Maeses line of 5 innings but with 5 strikeouts and 8 groundball outs.

3) Chris Leroux: Slim pickings here but seems like Leroux got stung with the BABIP cheese. 5.1 innings with 7 strikeouts and no walks is fine in my books.

Kings Platinum Arencibia

1) Shane Dawson: 1.1 innings with 3 earned runs, 3 walks and no strikeouts. That is pretty bad.

Love these recaps, thanks King! Great to see Maese pick up where he left off.

Why hasnt Ben Rowen been considered for the pen? stats are decent..

We don't know that he hasn't been considered, just that he hasn't been chosen.
