Jared Carkuff is signing and Ridge Smith is undecided.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.— More Bat Govs have found their way into the professional ranks.

Four Austin Peay baseball players were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday.

Junior catcher/utility Ridge Smith and junior third baseman/utility player Logan Gray were both selected early in the third day’s picks. Garrett Copeland, a junior second baseman, and senior pitcher Jared Carkuff were also drafted in later rounds.

Ridge Smith was picked up in the 12th round as the 372nd overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays, and Gray was selected in the 13th round (pick 403) by the Kansas City Royals, making this the second time he has gotten picked by his hometown team.

Both had been drafted straight out of high school with Smith going in the 29th round and Gray in round 25 by the Royals.

Copeland was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 30th round as the overall 901 pick. Carkuff went in the 35th round as the 1,052nd overall pick to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The admittedly nervous right-handed Carkuff found out that he had been drafted through a congratulations text from family friend Allen Dunn, LSU's pitching coach, before he even got the call.

"I went golfing with Josh Rye (APSU teammate) and had just finished on the 18th hole when I found out."

This season, Smith’s versatility was a huge plus for the Governors as he saw time at most positions in the infield.

Gray’s power hitting dipped just slightly from his sophomore season but was still strong enough to earn him a slot as one of the Ohio Valley Conference’s leading sluggers with a .687 slugging percentage, and he was in the top 10 for home runs (12).

Copeland was part of a middle-infield duo that gained a reputation for turning double plays. The Bartlett native's speed and ability to reach base make him a constant scoring threat.

Carkuff was one of the best relievers in the OVC and finished the season with a 3.57 ERA coming in behind three starters for the lowest ERA in the conference, including round 4 draft selection Joey Lucchesi.

At this time, it is unknown if any of the juniors drafted will take the deals or return for their senior seasons at APSU. Copeland said he will make a decision by mid-week. Carkuff will leave on Monday to join the Blue Jays' system.

King, now that the draft is over and we clearly won, can you open a new thread with updates of who's signing and for how much vs how much is left in the pool?

I'm actually pretty pleased with the draft for what was supposed to be a fairly weak draft year. Lots of projectable pieces in the OF and up the middle as well as pitching. Some guys that might be solid relief arms taken in the middle rounds.

a Freshman with 26 PA's gets a 1 out Grand Slam with 1 out in the 9th down 3...off a closer that just went in the 1st round. Unreal.

Can someone post any good "Winners and Losers" articles they have come across for the draft? I feel like the Jays did a decent job getting experienced college guys that still had some upside to them since they need to fill the system more than in recent years.

Keith Law ranked the Jays last I believe. Good news is its Keith Law...

It might be Keith Law but I'm not a huge fan of our draft either.

Hope I'm wrong.

I'm not a huge fan of the Jays draft but I'm mostly just not a huge fan of this entire overall draft. I don't think there will be two many winners that will emerge from it and I don't think the Jays did anything egregious here. They identified some guys with intriguing tools and also some warts and I don't think there was much of an opportunity (if any) to really do any better.

No. It wasn't horrendous...but it wasn't filled with as much high ceiling, early on, as I'd like to see.

Weird to see this draft unfold. Where are the high ceiling guys? The draft was strong in HS pitchers and the jays took none in the first 10 rounds.

Pitchers who profile as relievers and OF who can't play center but posess low power or poor hit tool are not desired pieces.

We need to give Shatkins 3 years to restock the farm with their own guys before we can really get a better idea of how it's looking. I want to write them off right now but that wouldn't be fair or the right thing to do.

Zeuch has as big an upside as any high school arm, it looks to me like Shatkins wanted to take the college guys with a alot of late helium and then go with the usual signability guys.
