burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Chris Davis is a career .254 hitter...dude got paid. There's more to production than average. Do you know how hard it is to hit .300 over 162 games? Bautista has only hit .300 once. Mike Trout hit .299 last year. Bryce Harper is a career .290 hitter. Ken Griffey f***in JR only hit .284 over his career...he's a bum! lol....I'd gladly take any of these guys as my DH @ $20M/year. I made a stupid comment in response to a stupid post. Batting average and RBIs is not how to evaluate a player obviously.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 If I'm giving a guy $80 Million I want a guy whos going to hit .300. lol better go give your $80m to Ben Revere instead of Mike Trout tips

metafour Verified Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I'll also add that if either of the 2 has declined, it's Bautista. Bautista is 9th in the league in wRC+. He's 3rd in BB%. His contact and plate discipline metrics are all holding steady. He is still an elite hitter Encarnacion? There has been a CLEAR systematic decline in his contact and plate discipline metrics in each of the past three seasons. He's swinging at more pitches, making less contact with pitches in the zone, and swinging through more and more pitches. Its a tell-tale sign of impending decline. You can already see it at the plate in him: considerably more really poor at bats where he's flailing at bad pitches and getting beat inside the zone. He's not a guy who "takes care of his body"; I dont foresee a scenario wherein this guy is still a "good" DH in ~2 years.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Two year deal EE and 3 year deal for Bautista with team options are all I'd ever consider for either.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Keep in mind these are extensions too. They are expected to take less on an extension for the security that it provides. With poor or even disastrous seasons, they'll wish they had signed extensions.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Just trade them both and get it over with....see what Shapiro can do. He can't even grow facial hair and AA had a dominant beard

Bautista looks like he's headed for a really good offensive year so I can't see him sacrificing any potential $ for security at this point.

Too bad Bautista isnt a hack like Swisher or he would easily landed a 5 year deal from Shapiro

Was speaking in terms of that, given the extension talks we are mentioning happened in the offseason.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Report: Blue Jays offered Encarnacion a 2-year deal The Toronto Blue Jays are apparently interested in bringing back slugger Edwin Encarnacion, and they're not going to give up on the slugger just yet. Toronto will revisit contract talks with Encarnacion at the All-Star break after the club made a guaranteed two-year offer to the slugger, who will be a free agent at season's end, reports MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Encarnacion hasn't made a counteroffer at this point, but hopes to receive a deal in the four-to-five year range on the free-agent market, Heyman writes. The Blue Jays are also reportedly willing to extend a three-year offer exceeding $20 million per year to Encarnacion's power-hitting teammate Jose Bautista, who's slated to become a free agent as well. Bautista is seeking a five-year contract for at least $150 million as a free agent, according to Heyman. The slugging pair have been boons for a powerful Toronto offense, generating an immense amount of pop for the reigning American League East champions. Old news Ang.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Edwin 2 and Jose 3 is fair Agreed.

puphood Verified Member Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I have loved watching these guys and I'm a fan. But it sounds to me like Shapiro is making the absolute correct business decisions for the long term health of the org. Its a negotiation or a non starter for EE, but either way its the right call. Jose looks like he is on a mission this season. Locked in. I really like Shapiro's moves so far he let Fatty go (who ain't so fat any more), didn't sign Lowe, traded Hendricks, Signed Storen (to one year/8 mil) and a bunch of mutts to fill a bull pen. and oh yeah tried to trade Saunders.......Oh and never went out and got anyone to fill the number one hole which apparently they don't need.....you witnessed what a Ace can do in Sale last night.....Shapiro is brilliant and a giant among strategists......Who is this Atkins as I don't here much about him?

I don't think you can blame Shapiro. He has been given a very strict budget and has been told to stay under. That is why AA left as he saw this job is impossible to succeed at. This ownership group does not want to spend to get better.
