FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Thole and Cola should both be DFA'd...
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Shapiro will probably give Colabello the old school 40 game window before deciding.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Send him down and call-up Montero if they want to wait on Pompey. Let's see if Montero gets hot and BABIP's his way to a great year like Cola did in 2015. The benefit is Cola can try to work through these slumps in AAA instead of hurting the big team, and if he doesn't, at least he's off the roster. Montero sucks. Worse hitter than Bello and is only a DH. Cola is at least decent at 1st base now and an upgrade over Edwin in the field.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 We don't need either since Smoak is a switch hitter. He's been pretty awful against lefties in his career, not sure what that means given it's 714 AB's though.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 We don't need either since Smoak is a switch hitter. Cola is a much better hitter than Smoak vs Lefties. Even then I'd rather just have Edwin play 1st and use the DH to get Tulo, Bautista or JD a half day off. No reason Smoak should be playing vs LHP even if Cola isn't on the roster.

Montero is projected to be a league average hitter while having zero positional value as a DH only. Thats not even an asset. His 5%BB rate and 23% K rate with a .154 ISO so far in AAA hasn't shown us anything different so far.

Edwin, Josh, and Jose are part of a large group of "f*** you projections" Montero still young, and he can be something good in the correct place. Buxton suxx, and Hader is the big deal.

I know projections are just projections but he hasn't shown he is any better than them so far this year. So why call him up if he isn't going to be an upgrade on the roster?

He does rake against L. vs. L: 115 wRC+ in 340 PA in MLB 1.011 OPS in 330 PA in MiLB (since 2011) vs R: 77 wRC+ in 491 PA in MLB .746 OPS in 928 PA in MiLB (since 2011)

Cola is (was?) pretty good vs Lefties too so its not like there is some massive upgrade. Add in the fact you lose defensive value going from Cola to Edwin and it doesn't seem worth it. Not to mention Cola seems like a good clubhouse guy and Montero has had some makeup questions in the past. If Cola is getting sent down I want someone who can provide value in the field.

I get what you are saying and I would give it a bit more time but true-talent levels can change. It's entirely possible that Cola (who is kind of a fringe major leaguer to begin with) gets worse at which point he's just pure garbage. It's also possible that Montero's true-talent level increases and he's actually decent. The latter is probably less likely to occur but we could be right in the midst of the former occuring and it wouldn't shock me at all. I'd just go to a strict platoon for now and keep Cola on the team but if he doesn't pick it up soon I'd make a move.

Colabello wRC+: 2014 Vs L 61 Vs R 98 2013 Vs L 63 Vs R 81 Colabello is an "one hit wonder player"

What I'm trying to say is Montero shouldn't be on the roster based on what he's done to this point. There's a good reason for Cola not being on the roster but if you are going to replace him you might as well replace him with someone who can provide value in the field. A left hitting platoon DH in this lineup just seems like a waste.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I'm going to say May 3. Why would he be DFA'd? He has an option left, no?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Why would he be DFA'd? He has an option left, no? Cola? I think Hurl posted he doesn't after a 23 gm stint in BUFF last year.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Cola? I think Hurl posted he doesn't after a 23 gm stint in BUFF last year. He was on the 40 man, though?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I've got him using up his 3rd and final option when he spent 23 days in Buffalo last year. Or was he not on the 40 man at that time? He was on the 40 man, though? Not sure Spank
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 By all means, we should have an option on him, IIRC.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I honestly think Kotchman would outperform both Colabello and Smoak tbh. He had a good spring and I like the way he uses the whole field. His defence is also good.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Uhmm... Montero. Montero can't hit RHP, so what's the point when the majority of pitching you see is RH. I think the line up would be better off with a contact / line drive, put the ball in play type bat opposed to Smoak / Colabello / Montero. A Kotchman / Montero platoon would be more productive.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 What, you think Montero would hit RHP better than Kotchman? No, I think Montero would be a great platoon, with Smoak. Kotchman can eat dicks.
