intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 lmfao That game really couldn't have ended any other way. I hate watching Dickey starts. Some of the most laboured, excruciating baseball possible. Somebody get counts going for the following events: Full counts (add a gold star for one that goes full from 0-2) Wild pitches/passed balls 2-strike hits My prediction from earlier. A little later than I expected, but this is how the game was decided.
jackie Verified Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I got worried when I saw biagini shaking off so many of Thole pitch calls. They were not on the same page
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 You can complain that we left 10 on base... But several times balls were stung right in gloves. I'm actually feeling like they're finally coming out of this beginning season slump after seeing today They are looking much better, but still not quite there, and not getting enough breaks go their way. The tide is beginning to turn though, I think.
admin Site Manager Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I got worried when I saw biagini shaking off so many of Thole pitch calls. They were not on the same page Thole wanted a nice easy breaking ball down the middle, anything outside and above 80mph he'll have trouble with.
nmrch Verified Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 We'rea month into the damn season, he doesn't need a f***ing day off. And I'll take a cold Martin with a broken arm over Thole. It's not hard to prepare to come into the game when you know you're coming in when Dickey is coming out. Stop looking for reasons, you're wrong. Gibbons is a terrible manager, period. People really don't understand how workloads of catchers is differeny from other positions. Look at how other catchers are treated, the only guy who plays almost everyday is Sal Perez. If anything, if you look a the workloads of catchers comparable to Martin (like McCann) we're working him too hard already
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 You are correct. The question isn't why is Martin getting the full day off, the question is why are we still giving Dickey a personal catcher instead of a great defensive catcher? I mean with Thole, Dickey is poised to be the worst starter out of our rotation. We can't justify giving him a personal catcher. What's the status of Jimenez? Isn't he supposed to be a wonder kid behind the plate defensively? I think we should roll the dice on him until we can find someone decent on the waiver wire. Jimenez is as bad as Thole offensively and I don't think he's had much practice at all with Dickey. Considering the learning curve, he's not really worth it as a temporary solution.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 lmfao That game really couldn't have ended any other way. Our worst player making an appearance.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Far be it for me to defend the Gibbster, but you have to rest Martin some times. The problem is we have this sack of s*** named Thole as the back-up because they would rather cater to their 4th or 5th best SP than put an actual MLB player in the back-up spot. I don't miss Fatty Navarro, but man, they could have signed Kratz again, or a whole host of other defense first catchers that can't hit.

You can't play your catcher that much and expect good performance. Especially now that the Jays have a high performance dept. they know how important rest and recovery is. As a catcher you can't just come cold off the bench thats not how it works unless you want him going on the DL pulling something.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Our worst player making an appearance. The league's worst player really. I don't know if there is a worse 25th man on any team and if there is I'd like to know who. There isn't a team who doesn't have Dickey that would have Thole on their roster.

He sucks?

Considering the learning curve, he's not really worth it as a temporary solution. The only solution at this point is giving the job to Martin and finding a usable backup C. The problem is and always has been that no other option has ever been legitimately trained.

Considering the learning curve, he's not really worth it as a temporary solution. I'm not saying he should catch dickey, Martin should. He should catch others like Estrada or Happ or someone, if his defensive skills are elite of course. I'm not looking for offensive output from our backup catcher.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 If floyd can stay healthy the pen is starting to look really good Floyd and Chavez will start games instead of Dickey
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 lol whats with this love affair of Erik Kratz around here. He sucks? He caught the knuckler in spring training a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken. The decision to have Thole on the team instead of him was I'm sure totally an organizational decision (iow, Dickey got his wish), but that's one guy who might be able to catch Dickey and be a serviceable back-up at the same time.

He's not complete dead weight and is a reasonable backup for Martin with the other pitchers too. Martin's days off are basically Dickey starts at this point, and that's not really a good way to do things.
jays76 Verified Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 It happens on occasion but we can't lose too many of these winnable games. We've already gift wrapped a few too many games this early in the season for my liking.
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 BABIP monster really abused us tonight. He's getting us back for a full season of Colabella
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Elite framer. Thole isn't that bad of a framer when you consider the knuckleball penalty. I don't really see how Kratz makes this huge upgrade if he's here over Thole. They're both s***** hitters and are only going to play 40 games anyway. The difference probably isn't even half a win.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 There were some intriguing catchers in the rule 5. Kratz only signed a MiLB deal. It wouldn't have been hard to bring in a guy to a least compete with Thole in the spring. There are guys available every offseason. Just last year Flowers signed for cheap, Kratz and McKenry signed MiLB deals, and Conger was almost free via trade. It's so goddamn frustrating to be chained to Thole.
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Bottom line - Dickey continues to be the gift that just keeps on giving lol
