Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I know it's Gibby's choice, we can't do anything about it as fans. But Pillar is just not a good leadoff buy. I mainly look for 2 things from a my leadoff hitter: 1. OBP lol obviously 2. #Pitches per AB, which's very important in my eyes. It increase pitch count for opposing SP, and let the offense to have good look at his pitches evry early on. Pompey!!!!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 This is retarded. The best lineup that's most balance against RHP should be Saunders Donaldson Bautista EE Smoak Tulo Martin Goins Pillar The fact that we are not doing this is f***ing stupid.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 What is the board opinion on who should lead off currently? I think there are 2 good options: Let Donaldson leadoff and move everyone up one spot and Pillar can hit 8th or 9th, or you give Saunders a look which would be interesting. He's always seemed to have a nice approach at the plate and seems to still have decent foot speed.

That's exactly what they should be doing I agree. I'd like to see Tulo get going a bit before gifting him a crucial RBI spot based on his name.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Put Saunders or Tulo up there! Pillar is better suited for the bottom of the order. He's not a leadoff guy.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Though to be fair, lineup construction probably hadn't cost us a game yet. The f'n pitching man...
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 10, 2016 Author Posted April 10, 2016 Though to be fair, lineup construction probably hadn't cost us a game yet. The f'n pitching man... Estrada is going to right the ship and it's Wright's turn to throw the ball to the back fence.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Jays need to get their bats under control, striking out at an epic rate right meow. They should still finish top 5 in fewest strikeouts.

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Literally anyone other than Goins would be a better choice. The worst part is pillar was gifted the leadoff spot and he's to too dumb to recognize the value of plate discipline batting at the top of the order. His comments about hacking away in preseason made me cringe. Ffs the pitch he stuck out on in the first could of hit him
Stoneyen Verified Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 I can't wait until we win a game and this thread gets buried until the next loss. Yeah it's idiotic that Pillar is leading off, but whatever I have more issue with the roster construction and bullpen management. Looking at you Carrera...

This was posted 4 days ago after our 2 wins and still a legitimate concern though I don't expect any logical solution until Travis returns. If it were me I'd just move everyone up and give the best hitters more at bats than Pillar. JD will adjust and the exact same hitters will be still be hitting in front of him after the first inning.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Pillar thinks he's a superstar It isn't Pillar's fault, it's on Gibby and the FO.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 So... The confidence boost and better pitches thrown to him by getting in front of big hitters hasn't caused his OBP skills to boost by 30+ points??? Shocker... Honestly. Such a dumb idea. Right from the start. 95% of the net ball junkies on BJMB all saw it. Why couldn't Gibby? Some of those swings yesterday were classic Pillar. He is what he is and that's ok (with his D) but put him in a line up spot to succeed.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 It isn't Pillar's fault, it's on Gibby and the FO. Pillar could have shut up in the spring. Gabby didn't want to hurt his feelings. Obvs. I blame Pillar.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Pillar leading off isnt the reason why the team is losing games right now. I mean I hate Gibbons as much as the next guy but the Bullpen has blown chucks so far. Its a week into the season, relax..
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Pillar leading off isnt the reason why the team is losing games right now. Yes I don't think anyone is arguing that. It's probably no more than a small hit on win probability. That being said, it's unquestionably a poor strategic decision.

I mean I hate Gibbons as much as the next guy but the Bullpen has blown chucks so far. Its a week into the season, relax.. Meh. Most fans are far from being panicked. I'm not anyway. You could say the same thing about Carerra as our 4th OF. But that doesn't make it the right personnel decision. Losing 4 games is based on a number of factors. It hasn't just been the pen either.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Anyone know how to interpret this? Edit: It seems like what's it's saying is that over this (admittedly very small) sample, the record is pretty much in line with the performance.

I dont browse the main forum that much, but I've seen a lot of "We would be 5-0 with a competent manager" "dumb hick has cost us 3 games now" etc.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Weird, options 1 and 2 appear to be the same.

I think that's mostly focused on the bullpen decisions but that's pretty tendentious too. The most egregious bullpen decision (the Morales one) turned out to be out of Gibby's hand and it's hard to quantify these things anyways. You don't necessarily get the right outcome from making the right decision. That stuff normalizes over time not necessarily over 5 games. I really think Cecil has been the X factor so far. Gibby has used him well and it has backfired. You get expected results from Cecil and most of this other stuff becomes moot.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Pillar could have shut up in the spring. Gabby didn't want to hurt his feelings. Obvs. I blame Pillar. Or all winter. The biggest proponent of Pillar at lead off was Pillar. f*** what's best for the team. I found his f***ing campaign for leadoff to be disgusting, and it's even more disgusting that Gibbons just allowed him to dictate this situation.

I don't mind Pillar campaigning but it's the manager job to tell players what their place is. When Pillar bitched about being pinch hit for, he got demoted. Now he's getting too big for his britches again but he's getting what he wants. I guess this is "the code" at work. Back then Pillar hadn't paid his dues yet and now he has.
