I hear what you're saying but you're not gonna put him in for Tulo and you're not gonna put him in for Donaldson. The only possibility would be Travis, but we can just use Barney for that.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Goins as a strictly defensive replacement is probably more appealing than Zeke, which is alarming. Our infield defense is really solid. You don't need both Barney and Goins as defensive replacements.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Our infield defense is really solid. You don't need both Barney and Goins as defensive replacements. And our OF defense sucks. Certain lineups will require two defensive replacements.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 And our OF defense sucks. Certain lineups will require two defensive replacements. The only lineups that require two replacements are the ones that don't already have both Upton and Pillar in them and if they're not both in the lineup than one of them is available defensively so you don't really need a 6th outfielder. That being said the extra lineup spot will have to be used on something. Whatever it is seems pretty extraneous at this point whether that's Goins, Zeke, Bolsinger, Barnes.

A sixth outfielder could come in handy if we're using one as a pinch runner. Let's say Upton/Pillar/Saunders start with Bautista at dh, which we'll probably see a fair amount. Pompey comes in to run for Edwin or whoever. Zeke could still be useful as a defensive replacement for Saunders.

No need to burn two separate players for the pinch running late inning defensive OF role.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Didn't Boslinger get his clock cleaned in AAA?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Just move Pompey to the OF in that scenario. No need to burn two separate players for the pinch running late inning defensive OF role. But then we'd lose the DH and if we have 5 bench players it wouldn't really matter if we burned two players. But you're raising good points, I think there is merit to several different postseason roster constructions right now.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 If Gibbons is picking the playoff roster, I'd bet he chooses his boy "Go Go" over Pompey.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 This just popped into my head Whatever happened to our annual "lets make a GDT in another dead forum" event

Whether it's Upton, pillar and saunders with bautista at dh or Upton, pillar and bautista with saunders at dh, the point remains. Unless you want smoak playing, these are the two options.

mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I think the org. essentially said as much recently. I'll see if I can find a link. But yes, this is assuming Sanchez stays where he is. https://www.thestar.com/sports/bluejays/2016/08/26/jays-see-sanchez-as-playoff-starter-which-is-a-relief-griffin.html Here's the article I was referring to. It's Griffin but it does contain direct quotes from Gibby.

And a gigantic LOL @ that Orioles OF defense.
