AdamLindsMom Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 And get who? Atkins mentioned AJ Jimenez being given a shot, they also have Lavarnway, Kratz and McGuire kicking around. All of whom are terrible with the bat like most back up catchers and good with the glove. Can't see them moving assets to acquire a C at this point. It wouldn't cost much to get a legit backup from a team that is out of contention. I don't have any names in mind but I can't imagine a playoff roster with Thole's name on it.

I don't have any names in mind but I can't imagine a playoff roster with Thole's name on it. I mean maybe? Padres could maybe move on from Derek Norris, but, he's heading towards his second arbitration and already making 3M(and is a former All Star so you'd be paying for bounce back most likely) Rockies could maybe move Nick Hundley, but, he's a worse pitch framer then Thole this season. Jeff Mathis could come back from Miami, might be the best of the best available. Dinner Plate? Ugh no. AJ Piersynkski? Ugh no. I really don't see a lot of names being out there that make sense as a back up catcher. And Thole was on the playoff roster last season, so it's already happened, you don't need to imagine it.
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Rain out of the forecast for today in New York. Looks like there will be a game.
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Hopefully blue jays forecast doesn't call for Smoak

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Jays really need Pillar back. Upton is such garbage. Been worth -0.7 WAR while striking out almost 40% of the time.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 He won't stay this bad It can't be possible he, Smoak and Saunders can all stay playing like this? Is it? I am looking forward to them doing something really positive none of us expect...soon.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 He won't stay this bad Are you sure? His last name is Upton... Really good or really bad, but never medium

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 He won't stay this bad Well obviously not otherwise he'd be released lol. Even if he improves a little bit he is still terrible. He's an awful option and should never start vs RHP, I think that is clear by now.

If only we had another option... such as a switch hitting CF in AAA who has a career .367 OBP over the course of 7 seasons in the minors. Nope I guess there's no one like that anywhere to be seen.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 Are Gibby Shapiro Atkins and the staff in Buffalo really certain than Ceciliani and Lake are better than Pompey right now? We don't get the advantage of seeing him play so we just get offence stats.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 A marginal improves Even 1 win right now could mean the difference between winning the division vs playing a wild card game. Every bit matters.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 My guess is Pompey hasn't been called up because the Jays want to make sure he has properly developed--JBJ of the Red Sox was the same way. Rushed to the majors, struggled, had to go back to AAA for quite a while. Once he had more AAA bats, he came back as one of the better players on the Red Sox (4.7 WAR, has a shot to hit 25 HR and possibly win a Gold Glove in CF). That, and he's had injury issues a lot this season. In addition, they want to be sure he's here to stay when he's up again in the MLB. He'll have a larger shot in 2017, when Bautista leaves/gets moved to DH/1B depending on what happens with he and EE.

I think its more that they see Pompey as a valuable player and a good piece for the future and want him to learn how to do things properly in AAA.
