King Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Upton has really looked bad at the plate. I remember him playing against the Blue Jays when he was with Tampa and he seemed like a good hitter. What's up with Upton? Here is tonight's lineup: Alcides Escobar leading off, is beyond stupid, still.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Upton finally gets to face a lefty tomorrow and its Danny Duffy. f*** off.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Just realized how awful Alex Gordon has been this year

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 what hearing? He pulled a Bobby Valentine and got himself suspended.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Upton finally gets to face a lefty tomorrow and its Danny Duffy. f*** off. Wonder if he can keep up his impressive whiff rate of 30.4%. Think about that for a second. He's swung and missed at almost a third of the pitches he's seen.

It's been less than 10 games, pretty much exclusively playing against RHP. Are you guys even trying?

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 It's been less than 10 games, pretty much exclusively playing against RHP. Are you guys even trying? Upton is going to suck against RHP regardless. We just haven't faced LHP to get him in the right position to add value. In a perfect world he plays against LHP and is a late inning D replacement for our walking dead OFs on the corners.

Good description. One difference is that when Smoak swings and misses he takes a mighty swing. Upton's swings look so weak.
vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Looking at his talent instead of his numbers isn't nonsensical. The Astros would trade us Alex Bergman for a PTBNL now if that were the case. We saw him with excellent command in the bullpen and it should have been obvious to everyone that he was just a small mechanical adjustment away. Instead of admitting that you were unable to evaluate this properly, you pretend that he made this magical transformation. It's always that way when stat scouts are wrong. That's a pretty terrible example.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 That's a pretty terrible example. You can easily see the talent in some young players even if the numbers don't immediately show it. Use whatever example you wish, but Bergman was fresh in my mind.

And while talent is king,(and to steal a hockey metaphor) all the tools and no toolbox players still exist. Stats bring value to scouting and so does having eyes on a person. Anybody wanting to do one without the other is not going to run a good MLB org. Not that any of us here ever will lol.

The issue I have with many on this forum is that they believe they can evaluate players using only stats. I've always been the biggest proponent of the balanced approach.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 So you think he will look less awful in a bigger sample size? Right now he looks like Smoak and Goins in a single batter. Yes, he will most likely look less awful than the -4.8 fWAR pace he's on.

Yeah all this does is support what Cyborg was saying about his viability as an everyday guy. He's a platoon guy and a quality defensive replacement and he's not making a case for an expanded role next year.

I still love the deal and think he will play a valuable role for us in the home stretch and playoffs if we get there. He is going to hit a few bombs along the way, and I like that he could give Pillar a day off in CF.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Not feeling too good about tonight or tomorrow. Not about the game, but about the inevitable injuries and suspensions. The Jays will surely protect Donaldson, and Ventura will continue to be a ********

I hope the Jays don't sink to his level. We got bigger fish to fry than that punk. Just hammer him.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Did anyone in their right mind actually think he should be an everyday player for us? Casuals.
nextyear Verified Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Did anyone in their right mind actually think he should be an everyday player for us? I wasn't sure, but I thought that we would see the Upton that played for Tampa Bay. At least I expected him to be as good a hitter as Darwin Barney, instead he is making Josh Thole look like a productive hitter. I am still hoping that Upton can get back on track. Upton was an everyday player for several years but there isn't an everyday opening in Toronto, so the answer is no, however we can expect him to perform like an everyday player.
