General 2016 Blue Jays discussion thread

You can say that about the thousands of replacement-level players playing in the high minors and on MLB benches. It's ridiculous to couch every statement about a bad player because a fraction of a single percentage of them will figure things out and become stars. Paredes is awful.

 

Eddie put up an 800 OPS over his age 23-25 seasons in Cincinnati. He was kind of a guy. A very promising young power hitter. The only season where he was truly bad was 2009 (which happened to be the year he was acquired by the Jays). His profile really took a hit in the late twenties when he turned into a defensive disaster and seemed to carry that to the plate. He looked like a bust at one point which made his eventual breakout all the more impressive but he had shown real potential as a young hitter. He wasn't quite as out of nowhere as say Paredes would be. A good comparison for EE would be Ortiz. Pretty similar hitters in their early careers with their first teams but injuries did to Ortiz' profile what defensive struggles did to EEs. Both were released at one point and both came back and went gang busters.

There was nothing to suggest prior that JB and EE were ever going to be this good. So really he could be the third coming for all we know.

At lease Bautista had demonstrated great pitch selection and an above avg ability to get on base. That's why he started 2010 at lead off before he broke out to hit 54 HRs.

 

Edwin had great raw power and hit 26 HRs with CINN and had an above avg wRC+ and OBP.

 

Nobody could tell what was to come of course, but there were signs I don't see in Parades that were positive.

I get all that and I think I was the first to question why Tabby and the Terminator kept calling him a good hitter...Perhaps I just like having someone who can play all over (even if it's poorly)...but really - who's a better option? Andy Burns?

I do think there is a chance he's had a true talent change though. Fangraphs had an article after his hot start last year that discussed his change in his approach, particularly his ability to hit the other way. He faded in his final 30 games but he was nail in his first 70.

 

Given our other options (Burns, Dominguez, etc.) it makes sense to keep him as a bench piece for now. Will he fail? It's certainly possible and most likely probable.

I really don't think I can handle this team pretending that Jimmy Paredes is a legitimate talent. He shouldn't even be on the team past the weekend when Travis returns.

Fair enough with EE. I'm well aware of his past and that he had loads of talent. But JB no one saw that coming not even Cito. Cito thought maybe 30 homers not one of the top hitters of the last 6 years.

I like Paredes fine as someone to audition as a bench off the bat option, like Colabello would theoretically be at this point and like Montero might be some day if Paredes washes out. Paredes at 2B over Goins is defensible as a "shake things up" kind of move very short term but Paredes over Travis would be pathetic.

After Goins comes back keeping both Barney and Goins on the bench together makes no sense as their skills are too similar. A 3 man bench with another reliever would make more sense than doing that.

 

I could see Burns over Paredes though as Burns can field and Paredes cannot. But I don't think there is any hope at all for Burns' bat. if Paredes can show that last year wasn't a fluke with the bat he could be an ok bench bat. His baserunning isn't as bad as people think either so he could pinch run too. In the GDT I saw people calling for Goins to pinch run for him but that Hale made the right move by letting Paredes run as he's the better baserunner.

 

I wish we had better options, we are discussing nothing more than slop, but for now I think Paredes can fulfill the Colabello-like bench bat role.

Well he swung and missed at 20% of all pitches last year so I don't see anything that suggests he's any better than the scrub he is projected to be. Only reason he was close to an average hitter last year was a .369 BABIP which isn't sustainable.

The Rogers Centre has to be in one of the best locations in all of the major leagues. What other baseball stadium is basically in the middle of the downtown core (are there any)? And the Rogers Centre is within walking distance of the subway and Union Station.

 

A couple of years ago I was starting to think that the Rogers Centre couldn't measure up to the newer retro-stadiums. However, now with the dirt infield and newer turf it is a feast for the eyes, not in the way that Camden Yards is, but more as a futuristic, engineering marvel, as if one is on the star-ship Enterprise "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." (in spite of it being almost 30 years old)
