I don't understand why they had to pick the Rays out of all teams. Why not the Marlins? or White Sox? Or some team with some Cuban history.

Yankees would have been good too.

Cuban history?

what I meant by that the best player to come out of Cuba

But looking at it now, the best Cuban player of all time would have to be Livan Hernandez..not someone who is exactly a sexy player.

I'm wondering if it would even be safe for Abreu to return to Cuba to play baseball. Maybe they wanted the opposite, a team with no Cubans.

Good point.

This is likely just what happened. It would be super awkward for Abreu to come back and play in Cuba, as players kind of tend to "forgotten" when they leave Cuba to play in the MLB, at least that's what has happened historically.

Well duh

I suppose. It's a bit risky but since this is all part of US-Cuba relation, of course he would want to be there, yes.

Hey, I was at Estadio Latinoamericano in April 2013 on one of my Cuba trips. I saw the Industriales beat Ciego de Avila, with about 15,000 in the stands that night. Only 3 CUC each for my wife and I to get in. An enjoyable experience, and among many memories: Yasmany Tomas hit a grand slam for the Industriales.

This is incredible. Just tuned on KK's hit. Great spectacle for their country and MLB.

Been to Cuba 5 times and love it. Baseball is such a passion there.

I'm thrilled to see Obama reaching out to re-establish relations, but selfishly one of my fav things about going to Cuba is lack of 'Muricans.

I'm pretty sure the Marlins were given the first offer to go. Given the strong (anti-Castro) Cuban expat population in Miami, they were smart enough to say no, rather than have a Cuban-led boycott in Miami.

Loving this interview with Obama.

Sport can help do what politicians can't always do.

The audacity of hope.

People always tend to think that Raoul and and Fidel are one and the same.

But Fidel had become bitter and paranoid, (probably due to the many CIA assassination attempts).

Raoul is much less interested in 'winning' and much more interested in improving the lives of his people.

When the dust settles, it will be Raoul that is remembered as the true hero of the Cuban revolution.
