If either of them acted unprofessional about it, there would be all kinds of magical "leaks" about how Bautista is a locker room cancer. I can't picture Edwin being a problem at all, he's too low key. But it would have too much potential to hurt Bautista's FA value. Plus, if there was that much negativity in the clubhouse, they would likely waive their 10/5 rights.

Bautista does a good job of posturing for the media, but ultimately Rogers is still his daddy and they hold the power here, not him.

Not sure I buy that. Jose and EE have been here a long time, waiting for the Jays to build a team around them that could win. We finally have it and now we're going to go to them and ask them to waive their 10-5 rights because their initial discussions in contract negotiations didn't go well? That would piss me off.

And why would they want to go anywhere right now? This team has one of the best preseason shots of winning it all. If their below .500 at the all-star break, this situation/discussion is a lot more plausible. Right now it's pure stupidity IMO. Don't listen to Bob McCowan - he's a maroon.

If EE and JB won't accept 3yrs then I'm on board with trading them if we can get something valuable for them. Hope they are working on it.

I find it hard either of them will be willing to waive their 10-5 rights if we are in the thick of a race.

Jays probably only offered EE a 2-3 year deal that takes him only to his age 35-36 season where EE is looking for a 4-5 year deal. If V-Mart got a 4-year deal at age 35, then EE definitely could demand a 4-5 year deal at age 33.

As for trading both EE or JB if the Jays can't come to an agreement before the season starts, I agree that would be stupid. The Jays have their best chance to contend this year with both JB and EE on board. Unless you get a solid MLB pitcher or piece for them, though I doubt that is the scenario. If the Jays are out of it at the deadline, then you explore those options.

This is how I see that conversation going...

EE - "Shatkins, Victor Martinez got 4 years, $68M at age 35. I want AT LEAST that"

Shatkins - "you mean the Victor Martinez who put up a -2.0 WAR last year and his already hurt again this spring (just like you currently are)? f*** off"

I don't blame EE asking for more than V-Mart. I'm sure 4 years around $80-90M with maybe a club option for a 5th year would get EE locked up.

That contract would be a disaster. I wouldn't even give Edwin $70 Million.

The Jays got a bargain on JB/EE's primes, and now they are expected to give them market value for their declines.

Isn't this the perfect time to cut bait? Try to win a WS with them in '16, and then whatever happens, thank JB/EE for their time, and move on after the season. Worst case the team is out of it at the deadline and maybe the players are more willing to waive 10/5 rights (especially since it removes draft compensation for them).

There is no downside to waiting. An extension makes no sense for the team right now.

I Agree with A. B all depends on the terms but it doesn't seem like anything particularly team friendly is on the table (which I think is what you're saying anyways but I thought I'd be pedantic about it).

Just as a side note if my memory serves me well right after the 2015 season EE went in for surgery for a hernia repair, and now is off with a oblique strain (which in Jays talk is just about anything) just wondering if the two injuries could be related. If so that ain't good news for all concerned and may actually play into contract talks.......

If we're leading the division at the deadline I don't think either get traded even though it could be best for the team. Shapiro has had to struggle to build general trust with the fanbase and letting them play it out might be a wise move for retention purposes.

In the event we are a .500 club then I think they wouldn't hesitate to ask for a list of teams. The odds of finding a competitive AL Team with a weak DH at the deadline who have the assets to trade for EE seems pretty slim, I don't see many scenarios where he's an easy trade. Where as I think Bautista would bring a lot more trade partners to the table who need an outfield or DH upgrade from either league.

I'm sure there are a few NL teams out there that would stick EE at 1B for a couple months.

They are related. He said he didn't swing the bat much in the offseason after his surgery so when he started swinging in spring training out of shape thats when he strained his oblique.

If I'm Shaktins - I'd counter by telling EE the Jays will do exactly what Boston did with his homeboy Ortiz. I'd point to the endless list of awful long term contracts handed out to players with negative defensive value (V.Martinez, Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder, etc.), explain the Jays aren't stupid (like DET & LAA) and note they are built to contend/win over the next 3-4 years. Then I'd offer him 1 or 2 year deals with an above average AAV while he's still a productive player.

If he balks at that - I thank him for the draft pick and show him the door.

Some of you guys need to get this trade idea out of your head for either JB or EE, it isn't going to happen, unless something goes horribly wrong and we're 20 games out, they're not waving their clause, period. These guys want to win, as do I. ;) We were 8 or 9 games back at the deadline last season and still went all in. How'd that workout?!(I know different regime, yada) They'd still have to find some takers and a fit for the player, it's not a video game, man. Lets get real here, either we sign one of these guys, or we take comp picks and move on.

I think then you have to be concerned about of the stability of the hernia repair itself as hernia repairs are prone to reopening......

I find it funny they weren't willing to offer Price a number but they are for Edwin. That number is insulting.

Based on what? Red Sox give Ortiz a 1 year deal every year and he's not insulted. You know what's insulting? The contracts given to Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder and Martinez. Shouldn't the Jays be insulted if EE asks for 5 years?

Have you been paying any attention to Ortiz lately? He's ALWAYS insulted.

It was a strategic offer. Edwin wants to stay. Camp is asking for 4 or 5 years. They are probably hoping they can settle on 3.

He's not insulted enough to leave though...He may whine and complain and want to get overpaid like Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder and Martinez - but at the end of the day, he seems to realise he's in a good position and is being fairly compensated......otherwise, he'd be in another uni.

talk is cheap.

Best post in this thread.

This team was 45-46 at the all-star break and ended up easily winning the AL East.

This roster was winning 70% of its games after the Tulowitzki trade and is essentially the same minus Price. Even if you replace Price's starts which were won 90% of the time with a .500 pitcher, that's still a .633 overall winning percentage. And it's not like the Jays were overly lucky either. Tulowitski and Martin were silent with the bat after the break, Travis was gone and Stroman came back for a few starts at the end of the year.

Assuming this team has average luck, instead of terrible luck, it is a contender for a 90+ win season. Mix in some good luck with injury-free years from all the big bats and you're looking at a team that can win 100. The chance of either of these guys being trade bait at the deadline due to the Jays being out of it is maybe 1% if that.

I think its really important to note that Edwin is a lot younger than Ortiz. He definitely deserves a multi-year deal. 4-5 years would be fair.

One thing that concerns me though when was the last time Edwin made it through a season without an injury?
