I gotta say, I'm a little disappointed with the construction of the rotation... Dickey?...Marco Estrada?....J Happ?.... Gavin Floy...or whoever? Aside from Stroman I really have no faith in any of the other starting pitchers. I guess the idea is that the Jays are gonna pummel the opposition each game with offense?... Not a bad plan as these bats can surely manage that.

I'm especially surprised that they resigned J Happ... And a little more surprised how positive the reaction of that was here... Sure, he pitched well in a small sample size in the NL... But we've seen him over a long sample size in the AL East getting his ass rocked- my bet is he's gonna be the same old gas-canny #5 kinda guy again. And Estrada, yes he was surprisingly good last year but if you look at some of his advanced statistics he's a prime contender for some BIG regression... Especially when you consider that the leagues gotten to know him better. And Dickey? Who the hell knows what you're gonna get out of him, but age isn't on his side.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: I don't think Hutch is as bad as he performed last year. I really can't see him going the way of Romero or whomever. If given the shot he should be able to provide some servicable time with #3/4 stuff. Sanchez is also super young and I think he should get another look in the SP role. Sure, there was things to be concerned with when he started, but he still managed to get by by the skin of his teeth and showed flashes of excellence. He was after all a 21 year old kid, experience is priceless.

In reality: I'd like to see a trade of EE or JB for a good starting pitcher, OF and some prospects to bolster the org... But the rotation seems filled up with mediocre, newly added depth... so it doesn't appear the "Cleveland Boys" are going to take that route.

Still, Would have been nice if they attempted to get a top-tier guy to replace Price. Hell the Shark or even Leake woulda been nice.

On the plus side they have improved their infield defense quite a bit. JD/Tulo/Goins should be able to eat up a lot of depth.. But then I think of Bautista and Saunders stumbling around the outfield... Yikes.

I think they might be trying to go the Royals route... Just hoping the rotation can give em 5/6 innings and then go with Cecil/Sanchez/Storen/Osuna... Only question is whether some of those guys even make it 5 innings though.

Stroman

Happ

Estrada

Dickey

Chavez

That's what I'm expecting.

I'd go with Hutch over Chavez. Chavez had the fortunes of pitching in some big-ass ballparks... And sometimes he'd be good and then he'd give up like 10 runs in 2 innnings somewhere. Guy isn't very durable. I think they're gonna utilize him as a longman/ fill-in kinda guy... That's ideally the role I think he'd prosper in.

The dominating offence definitely helps make the rotation look a little better. It's an average rotation, that will be good enough because of the bats.

from where it came from at the start of the off-season I am quite happy. It is adequate and could be much better being used properly. Will be an interesting year, which is exciting.

The rotation was in shambles to start the offseason. And not only the big league rotation but the AAA rotation as well.

I like the FO's approach to add several options on shorter term deals in order to build depth. We will need 8+ starting pitchers this season and I think the FO did the best they could in getting that 8.

Agree. Although losing Hendriks was tough and I never thought Id see Happ get more than Gallardo, their logic on the rotation and depth was sound.

More comfortable this year then the beginning of last year because of the depth. If one does not work we have other options that we can go to. Did not really have this luxury last season.

Yeah that Hendricks trade wasn't the best. That's also interesting about Happ getting more than Gallardo; I didn't think of that before. I honestly might prefer Happ but you would think Happ's market would be smaller than Gallardo's.

Gallardo would have got more but the pick screwed him

I wonder how many of those minor league guys can leave if they don't make the big league team?

but overall blue jays had a decent season last year but next year they should be able to get further with all the rotation they have

Does anyone else regret signing Estrada to that deal? Honestly I think I'd rather have Hutch and Chavez in the rotation than him.

And go with no depth? Pitchers get injured. Would you rather have Hutch or Chavez end up pitching when someone gets injured, or a chow ming Wang?

Don;t forget Redmond lol

Hows the old board?

We have 8 starters plus MiLB signings. Pretty comfortable.

Quality versus quantity....having a lot of something does not automatically mean goid.

I agree. For sure. I know its been discussed but I forget. What's a quantifying # for the value of a pick like that in a FA deal? (I still thought Gallardo would get more than Happ but that has more to do with my hopefully falsely jaded perception of the guy over the years etc)

Pick or no pick, I wouldn't spend more on Gallardo than Happ. Maybe that's just me.
