Laika Community Moderator Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 If it's just Saunders out, Bruce in, how much money needs to be eaten for it to even be defensible? Desirable? Is there even a $ amount shy of $10M where we should prefer Bruce to Saunders? I don't think so.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Well the Angels have to be giving up something... Maybe they are paying the difference in salary?
AdamLindsMom Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 How do we have an extra $10 million to get Jay Bruce but not a pitcher or a long term JD deal? This ^ This deal makes no sense on so many levels. Even if Saunders knee is pooched they'd be better with Pompey and $10 invested in the rotation.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Curious what the other pieces would be. I think we'd all agree Saunders is a better player than Bruce Nobody knows if that's true. We have no idea if Saunders can even still play.

I mean if we add an insignificant net amount to the payroll and don't give up any prospects I think I'll chalk it up to "well maybe they know something". But if we are talking 3-4-5 or more million added it's going to be a real head-scratcher for sure.
Praxis Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 How do we have an extra $10 million to get Jay Bruce but not a pitcher or a long term JD deal? Rogers Suits checked ticket and merchandise sales, TV revenue, Canadian dollar futures, marketing impact on production and product concept, EBITDA and earnings interest and then made a strictly baseball decision.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 @Ken_Rosenthal: Source: #Athletics pursued Saunders before getting K. Davis. Would have given up “B” prospect with Bruce going to TOR. @jeffpassan on it. Three-team deal involving #Angels, as reported by @jonheyman, likely would follow similar structure. Minor leaguer or two to #Reds.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Fact is you are speculating. Saunders will need to pass a medical before trade is completed. Healthy enough to pass his physical. And no longer capable of being the type of player he had the potential to be are 2 different things.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Nobody knows if that's true. We have no idea if Saunders can even still play. This.
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'd be livid if we traded for Bruce. He has been complete and total **** the last 2 years. -0.8 fWAR combined. Saunders, even with his injuries, is a significant upgrade in the wRC+, OBP, and defensive departments just based on projections. Of course, this is assuming he can even play. Not to mention he already never wanted to come here when he was good since he only took Toronto off his NTC now that he's s***. It's the baseball equivalent of a fairly hot girl you like hating you, and then only being into you a few years later when she looks like Pablo Sandoval. Unless we give up nothing and Cincinnati eats a ton of money and we can somehow fix Bruce... ugh.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 This. Agreed. You posted as if you knew, which you don't.

Even if payroll goes up by ~$5M, if they think Bruce should be better than Saunders then fine. But $10M isn't insignificant. Curious. Most curious.
jimmygibbssr Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Wasn't Brook Jacoby Bruce's hitting coach in Cinci?
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 @Ken_Rosenthal: Also: #Yankees, with Eppler as assistant GM, wanted Saunders from #BlueJays after TOR acquired him from #Mariners. Eppler now #Angels GM.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Agreed. You posted as if you knew, which you don't. Nobody knows. Saunders doesn't stay on the field..,
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Nobody knows if that's true. We have no idea if Saunders can even still play. Well if he isn't healthy enough I doubt he is going to pass a physical for a new team.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 There's enough fire to this that there must be something to it. It'll be interesting to hear the explanation on why Bruce is worth it in their opinion. Now if we were also getting Cingrani or someone like that, it would make a (little) more sense.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 There are many reasons why it would be better that this dead didn't happen. The best reason of all would be to shut Chowder888 up.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Unless there's another deal, like trading Bautista after his rant today for pitching or something, I would rather have Saunders on the DL all year than Bruce in LF. In fact, I'd rather put Saunders in a wheelchair in LF.

Is there even a $ amount shy of $10M where we should prefer Bruce to Saunders? I don't think so. For a 29 year old is there proof that 5 3 4 -1 0 is more significant then another combination of those numbers?? If he had gone 3 -1 5 0 4 would your opinion be different and is there proof that it should be? I don't know the backstory. Maybe the low opinions of Bruce are based on injury or mental status or something.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Why did the Jays even bring back Saunders if they have this little faith in him? Does this have something to do with Atkins not being in place when the decision to offer him arb was made? I'm perplexed by all of this.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Well...the one good thing with this trade is that we will find out soon enough if Atkins and Shapiro are completely bonkers or not and we will see how many people bandwagon jump to the Rays this time around. Who knows, maybe once it's all said and done we will all be happy with this deal and will praise these two as geniuses.

Clearly there's teams that would offer SOMETHING for him, so bringing him back makes sense regardless.

If the Angels offered a minor leaguer and no money to the Reds than I guess that's SOMETHING but only by the slimmest of margins.
