G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 MLBTR: JAN. 13: The Pirates released Sanchez today, according to Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Twitter link). JAN. 6: The Pirates announced that catcher Tony Sanchez has been designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on the roster for right-hander Neftali Feliz, whose reported one-year, $3.9MM contract with the Bucs is now official. Sanchez, formerly selected with the fourth overall pick in the June draft (2009), received just nine plate appearances in the Majors this past season and has only 155 Major League plate appearances under his belt. In that time, he’s compiled a .259/.303/.378 batting line with four homers. Sanchez has been about average in his 51 big league contests in the eyes of pitch-framing metrics, but he’s also struggled to control the running game, throwing out just 17 percent of attempted base-stealers (5 of 30). Those throwing struggles have also existed at Triple-A in recent years, though his bat at the top minor league level has been better, as he owns a .248/.342/.415 batting line at the Triple-A level across parts of four seasons. The 27-year-old Sanchez will now be in limbo for up to 10 days as the Pirates explore trade options. Pittsburgh can elect to place him on outright waivers at any time in that window, at which point clubs throughout the league will have the ability to claim him, in the reverse order of last year’s standings.

Sounds like a good depth signing if Martin gets hurt or if Thole sux too bad and Sanchez is playing great in Buffalo Edit: Does Thole have any options left? (MF Thole .204/.250/.245 last season)
CHRIS Verified Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Edit: Does Thole have any options left? Dickey plays for the Toronto Blue Jays. Thole has no options.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 Dickey plays for the Toronto Blue Jays. Thole has no options. Martin caught Dickey for most of 2015 though didn't he?
CHRIS Verified Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Martin caught Dickey for most of 2015 though didn't he? I think they'd probably like to split those two up for 2016, assuming it's true that the knuckleball beat Martin up and that the focus required to catch the knuckleball affected his performance at the plate. My Thole response was tongue-in-cheek; he may technically have options left (not sure), but realistically it seems like he's hitched his wagon pretty firmly to Dickey. Hard to imagine another team claiming him, if it comes to that.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I like him as the AAA catcher over Quintero and Jimenez.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Anyone have a read on his defense/framing? Looks like he could be a solid backup ML catcher. Good move by Shatkins....now go get Austin Jackson
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 the question we are all asking..... can he catch a knuckleball?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 How is his framing? About average if you read what GSnarls included in the second post.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I wonder if Martin played a role in this signing. He's worked with Sanchez before. Maybe Atkins consulted him when Sanchez was first designated. Anyway I like the signing. Much closer to average hitter than either Thole or Jimenez and he might still have a bit of untapped upside.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Looks like he threw out around 20% of base stealers, what is the average for backup catchers? Is that around normal or low?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 How is his framing? He played for the Pirates, I'm guessing above-average.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Looks like he threw out around 20% of base stealers, what is the average for backup catchers? Is that around normal or low? Below average.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Not really.. Jimenez is by far a better defender and we have enough offense to hold the the fort if Martin gets hurt.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 You know this how? Stuff i read on Sanchez and first hand watching Jimenez play. Maybe saying Jimenez is a better defender "by far" is a bit of a stretch, but i'm confident in labeling Jimenez as the better defender.

Concerning the 40 man.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Jimenez had a 218/296/322 slash line as a 25 year old in AAA. He'd have to be a hell of a defender or be really good at catching a knuckleball to even be worth rostering.

A few years ago i always thought he was going to be a solid defensive catcher but the injuries have kind of f***ed his career.
