saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I'm speaking the reality of an aging roster (oldest in MLB?) and a bare farm system. It won't be pretty in a few years. the sky is falling in, the sky is falling in!
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 That's it? Puke. pillar too....and in 2 years alford, greene and some others will be added to the mix.
Nafro Verified Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I think Tellez offers us the most over the long term on this list. He's going to be a masher. I think his bat allows us to let one of EE or Jose go. (Likely EE, who we end up getting a compensatory pick for). Just my cent and a half.

Nafro Verified Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Yep, Ala Cubs Vogelbach Lol its possible. Great minor league stats though. Sometimes raw power just never shows up in games. Time will tell. Vogelbach is super blocked by no DH and the Rizzo.

I'm going to hold out hope that Shapiro can retool on the fly and avoid any down seasons, but yeah, AA detonated 2017-beyond for 2015. Then you factor that, unless some of them are brought back, the Jays are losing Bautista/EE/Cecil/Storen/Dickey/Chavez/Smoak/Saunders after 2016, with not much in the way of prospects to fill those spots (other than Pompey taking over for one of Bautista/Saunders). Not a very ideal situation. I echo the "f*** you Alex" sentiment. Or "thanks for Donaldson, but f*** you Alex" might be better.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I still don't see anything in Norris or Hoffman worth missing. Pompey is still a prospect for all intents and purposes. Stroman, Osuna, Pillar, and Travis are all under contract for many more years. The sky isn't falling. It's definitely not an elite farm but it's not the worst, and we have a great team and a fantastic playoff run to show for it. We had a top farm for several years there, personally I found a playoff run a lot more interesting.

After the run the Blue Jays made I don't think anyone can say the trades didn't work out for the Blue Jays. Even though the Mets made it to the World Series I'll take the Jays season over the Mets. Everyone will remember Bautista's HR in game 5 but no one will remember the Mets run.
Key22 Verified Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 The only thing that actually matters is the MLB club and the MLB club's results. The farm is there to aid the MLB club either through trading chips to improve the MLB club or developing them into star talents. AA rebuilt the farm - traded it - then restocked the farm - then traded it. Each time moving us from near bottom to near top to near bottom to near top in a relatively short time. You trade one high end prospect so what? Next year you will draft another high end prospect. You fill in the missing bits with free agents. 3B/SS/C/CF/DH/2B/1B should be decently covered by the core in place for the next 3-5 years with what we have assuming one of EE/Bautista is resigned. Jays only really need to look at the corner OF spots and back up catchers. Rotation in terms of the front three will be here for at least 2 years leaving a couple of rotation spots and bullpen arms as the main things to be looking to cover from year to year (after the 2017 season). So they have some time to re-stock the farm (2-3 years) while they have a reasonably solid core group.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 AA picked some carrots for the feast but it's not like he tore up the farm. Really, the state he left the 2016 pitching depth in was more concerning to me than the general state he left the farm in. Having absolutely no pitching depth beyond a few MLB guys forced a lot of MLB level moves and expenditures. Very costly when you add everything up - and the damage fixing it is still not done, probably. Sure it's a bottom third farm right now but it's not barren, and it's the type of deficiency that can be addressed over time with good drafting and signing, sound developing, shrewd trades, and maybe a comp pick or two. Shatkins can pick away at it; the farm isn't a pressing issue.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I'm really encouraged from what I've heard Shatkins talk about development. I think they are right when they talk about there still being a big deficiency in how franchises develop players. Its no coincidence clubs like the Cardinals, Indians and Giants yield great results from players year after year. At least half of MLB clubs operate in that once they draft a player he's either a good player or a bad player right away. There isn't nearly enough of a focus on improving player's skills. Atkins briefly talked about his at the State of the Franchise. I'm really excited to see what the new Spring Training Facility is going to look like. Hopefully they find a site pretty soon.

Nafro Verified Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Blocked? Ala Schwarber? I think I misunderstood your first reply as saying Vogelbach was s***. I assume everyone speaks fluid sarcasm, mostly because I am so sarcastic. Schwarber seems to have a little more positional flexibility and a better bat than Vogelbach I think.

My point is..........If Tellez and/or Vogelbach hit the ball, both will play in the mayor no matter what.
