KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Career K rate over 9. Not a bad guy to nab on a MiLB deal. Not bad at all.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Another solid depth piece with some potential upside. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/finding-the-next-bargain-relievers/

GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 How to build a bullpen 101. Wait for the flashy big names to come off the board and then a million guys to minor league deals with stuff and hope a couple pan out.

You mean turning your SP prospects in to BP relief for 'experience' and then keeping them there is not the best method?

Not quite sure what you are getting at here? Both regimes seem to enjoy dumpster diving to fill depth, and as we saw with AA, sometimes it works out very well.
intrigid Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Is this the guy that was #1 in major league history?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Is this the guy that was #1 in major league history? In alphabetical order? Yes.
rydermike Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Is this the guy that was #1 in major league history? Yeah, he stole the #1 alphabetical order spot from Hank Aaron.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Pretty clear contrast between regimes in terms of valuing depth. Nice to see. I dunno last year the Jays did really well in siging minor league FA. Colabello, Carrera, Doubront, Hague were all pretty good and I'd argue better than what the Jays signed this year thus far.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Flashback Friday. When was the last time David pitched?
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Flashback Friday. When was the last time David pitched? He pitched in 33 games with the Braves in 2015.

Let's face the fact AA was crap he didn't care about anything except trading prospects and also Shapiro is the best ever.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Pretty clear contrast between regimes in terms of valuing depth. Nice to see. This signing doesn't indicate any change in philosophy. We have signed several relief pitchers to minor league deals for each of the past few years.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 these guys aren't having a hard time finding depth like AA did. or maybe he just didn't give a s*** about it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) these guys aren't having a hard time finding depth like AA did. or maybe he just didn't give a s*** about it. I think he just didn't place enough value on it. He would get some depth but it never seemed like enough. This contributed in some part to the team not meeting expectations in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Toronto was extremely lucky in the health department IIRC. They got 28+ starts from 4 different SP, which is pretty crazy. So was Stroman's miracle recovery. Did a SP even get hurt outside of Stroman? I guess Buehrle's shoulder wore out. He also had a weird habit of bringing guys into the org and then never really giving them a chance. Or cutting them loose after 1 big league innings, etc. Edited February 5, 2016 by Laika
Frag Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I see no harm in this signing. I like it.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Love minor league deals. But do we need a thread every time I doubt it.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Love minor league deals. But do we need a thread every time I doubt it. I like to be notified of signings via a new thread. The obsession with having just 3-4 threads and using them for everything is quite absurd.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Every Blue Jays transaction, no matter how small, deserves a thread. It should be in the message board constitution.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Pretty clear contrast between regimes in terms of valuing depth. Nice to see. It will be nice for the jays to actually have a bench this year and some solid depth ready for when s*** happens, because it always does.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 He also had a weird habit of bringing guys into the org and then never really giving them a chance. Or cutting them loose after 1 big league innings, etc. never understood this. If the guy is good enough to have as depth, why cut them after one outing? AA had a lot of one and done pitchers. If you burn through your depth this way you need a s*** load of of it and AA never seemed to
