Laika Community Moderator Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Someone tell him that he has no idea how Rule 5 picks work. There is a greater than 90% chance Biagini breaks with the team. I wouldn't say it's that high. To keep him they probably have to waive someone else like Delabar. I know Delabar is s***. Really they should option both Hutch and Sanchez to start the year (assuming everyone is healthy) simply because they'll have reasonable excuses to. Chavez or Floyd in rotation. Schultz and Tepera should be in AAA. Biagini makes the team and at least gets a look. I'm most excited to see Blake McFarland and Ben Rowen. And of course Venditte. Aardsma is probably garbage.

Not to mention how Biagini pitches this spring will have a huge impact on whether or not the Jays decide to keep him.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Yeah that article was weird. I have to think Hutch has a pretty good shot at the 5th starter's job, considering how highly the Jays staff speaks of him. Worst part of that article was mentioning Colabello getting reps in the LF. There is zero way after the gongshow last season Cola plays LF for this team again on a regular basis.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I don't think there's anything wrong with him getting reps in LF. If he's able to improve he can give the team more versatility in the field. That's what ST is for after all. I'm also a bit surprised that Hutch is being regarded so low. There are roster reasons why he might not make the 5th job, but it feels like too many are writing him off on a pure talent basis.

Bello's not very coordinated, he's a DH/1B, even that might be pushing it.

I think you have that backwards. There's a 90% chance he doesn't make the team, just like any other rule V pick.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bello's not very coordinated, he's a DH/1B, even that might be pushing it. I thought he was pretty solid at 1B.

His skillset is not suited for LF at all, no matter how much work he puts in I don't think he will ever be replacement level defensively in the OF. I'd rather he just work on improving defensively at 1st base, where he actually will play a lot this season.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Was Dickey's surgery really kept quiet all winter? I dont remember hearing about it http://www.tsn.ca/dickey-had-knee-surgery-earlier-in-offseason-1.441317

baseballsss Verified Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Nobody cares about Dickey. He's just a human pitching machine that gets you 200 innings and a 4 ERA. He could have amputated the leg and it wouldn't have mattered. I would have cared.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 He also didn't mention Hutch in the article. Let's be honest, if he can't outpitch Aardsma - then we shouldn't even talk about Biagini....
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 He's been there for a few days. Tulo still rocking that old s***** glove? or is that him in both pictures?....and he's working in a new red/blue glove on the right?
rydermike Verified Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I don't mind giving Colabello LF reps. It's spring training, after all, doesn't matter. But you never know what could happen in a game (18 innings, injuries, Interleague games) where the bench ends up getting too short. Happens a couple times every season where you play guys out of position - Martin at 2nd, EE and JB at 3rd, Goins in LF, etc
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 ^ Exactly. It's not that much a zero-sum situation. If he gets a bit more practice in LF in addition to his regular position it can only be a good thing. Never know when some sort of injury or pinch hit decision could be alleviated by having one more guy who can at least position himself to catch a fly ball.

I wish there were reports that Bello spent all offseason working his tail off with some defensive wizard to improve his defense at 1st - and in LF. It's hard to fathom how much more valuable Bello would be to the Jays if he was passable in LF. I'm really interested to follow Bello and Pillar this year. Both are massive question marks and keys to the Jays overall success if you ask me.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Why do people continue to s*** on RAD? The trade for him is long done, measure him by RA9 WAR and get over it.
