DerangedIdoit Verified Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 This may be a move looking at 2017 and beyond. The FA market is thin in pitchers next year, and the Jays also have EE and JB to resign. They may want to solidify the rotation now for the next couple seasons so they have less to worry about in 2017. It's slim pickin's now. Even if Shapiro decides to acquire another SP if will probably be a reclamation project on a cheap 1 yr deal like Latos or Fister. Which unfortunately won't help us out next year or beyond.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Ian Kennedy replacement level lol SIERA consistently under 4 with the Padres with 10+ SwStr
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Also I'd take Kennedy over Happ since he has been an okay pitcher for Years and Happ had a good 2 months. Knowing the Royals Kennedy will dominate in KC and those timely hits will deliver the wins

But that's not true..Gallardo would help us next year that's the point, Dickey won't be back next year.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 But that's not true..Gallardo would help us next year that's the point, Dickey won't be back next year. Dickey and Chavez are both FA after this coming season. Doesn't mean they won't be re-signed. For 2017, Stroman, Happ, Estrada, Sanchez, Hutchison are under control. Greene and Harris in the pipeline. Agree that Gallardo for 3 years is for 2016 and beyond, and a good signing depending on the $$. Having said this, this is most likely media rumour mongering.

Maine Jays Verified Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Doug Fister + keeping our 1st >>>>> Gallardo + losing our 1st rounder
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I worry everyday I come into this thread that Shapiro signed this Ugo. I can't wait til the day he signs with someone else.
DerangedIdoit Verified Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Apparently the Astros are hot on his trail. Imagine facing that rotation in the playoffs. Keuchel, Gallardo, McCullers and McHugh. Keuchels an ace, Gallardo is a jays killer and we all know how good MnM can be.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Latos, please. Mat Latos might be the most revolting person in Major League Baseball. Can't really think of another current player that hate more

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I can't say I disagree with you. But he can pitch, and he does it well. I don't really know how true that is either, lol. His velocity has tanked the last few years and so has his ability to stay healthy. I feel like he's just in terrible shape.

His velocity has tanked the last few years and so has his ability to stay healthy. I feel like he's just in terrible shape. It was back up last year almost a full tick over 2014, FWIW. I'm not sure if he's made any mechanical adjustments along the way, but he would be a nice 'reclamation project'. I wouldn't see the harm in signing him to a cheap 1-year deal. Even if he doesn't pan out, there's just really no risk to absorb. If he pitches well, he could steal a spot in the rotation, or possibly provide a great depth option. Meh, I dunno. I don't feel too strongly about it wither way. I just think there's some potential there, and he could probably be had fairly inexpensively. I don't actually mind the rotation and depth as is, but I feel like another depth addition with some upside would make me feel a whole lot better about going into the season. The only downfall is potentially having to look at his ugly mug, which shouldn't be overlooked entirely.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Yordano Ventura for me and no one else is close.
BeastMode Verified Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Most likely we sign no one. Less likely we sign someone else. Least likely we sign Gallardo. We clearly have no budget room left and I'm supposed to believe Shapiro's going to go over budget for a s***** pitcher with poor underlying numbers and a pick attached? lol. The report was click bait as it was a slow news day.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 The report was click bait as it was a slow news day. McCown made an uninformed suggestion to Shapiro during the radio interview. Shapiro gave a diplomatic answer instead of outright dismissing it. The next day it's a "rumor". Definitely clickbait. I doubt the Jays are even considering it.

The re-assurance is fact, BNS gives zero fact or absolution.
