I think the time has come to proclaim him the everyday DH.

I know his K/BB is abysmal. But a guy with an .886 OPS doesn't grow on trees. He's earned some trust.

People said after a hot start, he would collapse by June. he didn't.

People said he would collapse in the last few months of the season. He didnt.

People said he wouldn't hit in the playoffs. He did fine.

I just think he earned the everyday DH job and relegated Smoak to a bench player.

Short answer: No

Long answer: A Smoak/Cola platoon likely provides the most value.

Convincing argument.

He has earned the strong side of the platoon at 1st base....

Not really but I don't hate the platoon.

Just a random weird stat:

July was the only month where Colabello struck out less than 25% (21.4), but also the only month where he failed to hit .300 (.224). He also had his highest walk rate (8.9) and a typically strong .204 ISO in that month.

Gibbons said Colabello will see "plenty of time vs RHP this season".

That's confusing. Why bring back Smoak. I hate the idea of having more than 2 players who can only play 1B or DH.

I don't think Gibbons will be given as much rope to make his own decisions like he had with AA (the idiotic DFA of Valencia because Gibby didn't like him, for example). If the FO wants Smoak to start at 1B, then he will.

I don't think Smoak was brought back at $4m to be a defensive replacement. I think we'll end up seeing a platoon for most of the season.

Was this founded? I must've missed this.

The story is that Gibbons didn't want to platoon Ben Revere, so they had to make a decision on Colabello or Valencia, and apparently AA said that he left the decision up to Gibbons. Colabello had options left so he could have been demoted and called up again in September, but they decided to lose an asset for nothing instead.

Where'd you read this? I never heard this before, just that he wasn't good in the clubhouse.

Probable that Smoak outperforms Cola when defense is considered. I want Cola gone for some reliever and a more versatile bench piece added.

Yes. Very excited to have Smoak's .699 career OPS coming out of the 1B/DH spot. Hommmerunnnzzzz is good.
