KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I'm regretting putting together a list. This was more straightforward when we voted one at a time. It's really hard to say this player who profiles like X and did Y in league Z is worth more than player who profiles like A and did B in league C. Trying to make so many of those judgements all at once just left me confused and I don't think I really applied consistent criteria. I really don't have enough conviction to defend any of my rankings, not even the ones at the top much less the ones at the bottom. I did come away with the general sense that the system is very poor at the moment.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 I check the DSL box score's everyday, but refused to include any as prospects prior to playing in NA, ideally even until full season ball. The one exception being Vlad Guerrero Jr., and mostly because this system is so lacking in high ceiling impact talent. I would generally take a bullpen guy or a defense first middle infielder over an under 18 guy, but I haven't been watching and following this year and I already ranked 3 guys in the top 8 that I hated when drafted and have done zero to prove me wrong...but there just isn't a lot there so I took a flier on a guy that was putting up good numbers at a young age.

I thought I had the necessary info to do so but when it came time to juggle all that info, I'm not so sure I did a good job. I was wrong. It happens.

Many of you will never get the time back it takes to learn about these players as most will not ever make it to MLB. There may be one or two sleepers in here, and a few are very much legitimate prospects. Deiferson has been in the system for four years now and he's still just a young guy in the low minors who might turn into something.

He was a top 10 international prospect in 2014 (according to BA) and we gave him a pretty substantial bonus. He's only 17 and has only thrown 30 innings, in which he's struck out 29. I'd categorize him more as high-risk, high-reward, and far away.

You can't conclude that a pitcher has bad command after 30.2 innings as a 17 year old. Scouting reports actually say that he has good command and feel for his pitches.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2015 Author Posted December 16, 2015 You can conclude that he had bad command at that time. I just don't think it matters much. It's not even 5 starts worth of innings.

From what i heard and saw a little video of Meza, he had pretty good command when they signed him. So I'm not sure what happened to him in his brief start to his career.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 So he was either getting his mechanics fiddled with, or he was hurt.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2015 Author Posted December 16, 2015 So he was either getting his mechanics fiddled with, or he was hurt. Or he is a 17 year old pitcher with an extremely small sample size. You should apply Ockham's Razor instead of jumping to conclusions in my opinion.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 K, why is he so high then? Won't be in a TBJ conversation for 4-5 years. Of course he won't be. If that's your attitude then why sign international prospects at all?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 K, why is he so high then? Won't be in a TBJ conversation for 4-5 years. You were a Ricciardi fan weren't you...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I feel like people are putting too much emphasis on statistics at rookie levels. Not only are the sample sizes extremely small but these guys are so young. You give them the big bonuses because of the potential they have and you put faith in your development system to teach these players how to get better.
