Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 It's time to trade Edwin for a controllable Young SP. Tulo 1B/DH (Wilner idea?), Jose 1B/DH, Edwin 1B/DH, Colabello 1B/DH, Martin 1B/SS/DH isn't a smart roster management
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Since they know EE would probably waive his 10/5 rule to go the Red Sox, I'd be tempted to extend him and flip him for x,y,z by the deadline. Trade 4 Farrell

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Thats the thing JB will want to be paid as a star right fielder and he has little value as a outfielder anymore. He has an arm and that is it. Breaks are worse, speed is declining (age catching up to him). If it was up to me sign EE and either Trade or let JB walk (pun intended). JB would still have a ton of value as a DH/1B. There is a good chance that he outperforms EE in the next 3/4 years if he DHs half his games.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 You don't need a source to determine mutual interest between a team with no 2017 1B and a 2017 free agent 1B. "We want Edwin Encarnacion playing for us" is a given for every team in the league. It just so happens that Boston will have this distinct need and it's not a stretch to think they believe Edwin will be open to playing in a place that needs his services.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 We saw this little bird grow
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 just don't let jose go to the sox...
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 MLB Trade Rumors #Mariners, #RedSox progressing on Wade Miley trade, per @Ken_Rosenthal. Wade+ for Edwin, Sha-pai-ro
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Do the Red Sox really think they can afford to trade away a starter???
Followthelight Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 This really stinks as I love EE, but we prob are not keeping both EE and Bautista.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I'd see what Zobrist signs for and then use that as a basis for an offer to both of them. They are different players but similar ages and talent level. Moving forward we have payroll space and I also believe if Bautista can play 1B we will have enough room on the roster too. Zobrist is going to sign for something gross.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I'd like them to sign both, realistically it won't happen. They should both retire as Blue Jays but they won't sign either, hope I am wrong.

Like another guy said, it's a heart versus mind situation, I want both to retire as jays but realistically it's not worth it.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Imagine what they could do in half a season at Fenway... and they have Chris Young too. I think he's going to have a big year. Um, just about as much as they do in half a season at the Rogers Centre + a large portion playing in Fenway, Yankee Stadium and Candem Yards?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I wouldn't bring either back, seriously. Bautista is 35, and go take a look at Encarnacion's plate-discipline metrics (swing %, contact %, whiff %) over the past three years: he's regressing. That's not what regressing means!
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Author Posted December 7, 2015 Um, just about as much as they do in half a season at the Rogers Centre + a large portion playing in Fenway, Yankee Stadium and Candem Yards? The green monster turns a lot of outfield flies into doubles, I'd think.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 The green monster turns a lot of outfield flies into doubles, I'd think. And it also turns line drive homeruns into doubles. Give and take. The RC is a bandbox.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 The green monster turns a lot of outfield flies into doubles, I'd think. It also turns FOs into HRs.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Keep Bautista just for his epic f***ing home run/bat flip.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 To play devil's advocate for a minute though...Edwin and Bautista both want to win and both were willing to defer salary to get Santana a few years ago. Possible they could give a hometown discount if the team is in any position to win.
fireballW Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I would not want to be in charge of setting the course for this team over the next year. Many tough decisions to be made. You'd trade everyone for prospects and think it was awesome.

Possible they could give a hometown discount if the team is in any position to win. They already both gave a discount. Bautista's was a bit more reasonable, considering he had one great year. But Edwin for some reason took a very undermarket deal. He deserves to be paid.

But Edwin for some reason took a very undermarket deal. He deserves to be paid. I think they took them for the same reason. Edwin had only put up one and bit big seasons before the extensions. Edwin's D was more limited than Jose who had a 6.5 WAR in his breakout season. They were fair deals for both sides at the time with some risk that they were both one hit wonders.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 They already both gave a discount. I wouldn't classify either signing as a discount per se, but more so a taking on of risk from all parties. On those two deals, it has worked out quite well for the Jays. The thing I like about Shapiro, which may or may not even be a thing, is that I get a feeling that when it comes to their next deals, the offers will be based on what he thinks they will provide moving forward, rather than an offer that includes a "make up" their "lost" earnings of their previous deals.
