IBTrini Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 The Jays had to have more than an increase in 30 million profit from last year to this year though, no? I guess if you go by opening day payroll its been increased by around 10 Million USD but it is still the same as it was in 2014. BLUE JAYS PAYROLLS Year 25-man Opening Day 40-man Year End (rank) 2015 $125,915,800 $ ( ) 2014 $137,177,700 $135,435,701 (10) 2013 $119,277,800 $125,879,791 ( 9) 2012 $ 83,739,200 $ 92,133,335 (17) Not to belabor the point but you are still quoting USD$ to reference the salary portion of their budget. Their player salaries/commitments/contracts are guaranteed in USD$ while Rogers earn revenue in CDN$. They still have to buy the foreign exchange to meet those commitments. Since the norm is to quote players salaries in USD$ it seems as if there is no movement when in fact they are spending more on salaries. If they made CDN$ 30 million in profit it was essentially rolled back into payroll - it's just semantics. 2015 salaries - approx CDN$ 161 million 2016 salaries - approx CDN$ 189 million Salaries did go up if you were to reference the correct currency. It's just unfortunate that the Jays is the only MLB team affected by this scenario. If they Jays was a US team operating with a US dollars their salaries would be reflected as a 28 million increase from the previous year. Take David Price contract as an example. It cost Boston 217 million however if the Jays were to win him over at that market value it would have cost them approx 293 million which is equivalent to 80 million more since they operate with CDN$. Rogers has money but it isn't a bottomless pit and as such cannot spend carelessly. It is still a business and must operate prudently and not emotionally.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 After straight up asking her weight too. Stunning. It takes a brave/stupid man to ask a woman her weight.
IBTrini Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 They had money. It's just that they spent most of it on the thoroughly unsexy (but possibly shrewd) signings of Happ and Estrada. I hear/see this comment often but it is not quite clear how much money it represents. On top of that the Jays needed to replace 2 starters and some BP arms so they got Happ and Estrada for a combined average of 25. Do you realistically think spending money on the following players to obtain 1 starter while not filling the other holes makes sense: Greinke at an average of 34.4 million (Previously had the Jays on a no trade list) Price at an average of 31 million Zimmerman at an average of 22 million Samardzija at an average of 18 million (I don't even think he would have been willing to come here) I am not a GM nor even play in fantasy leagues but from my perspective not knowing the real money amounts available is makes it hard to decide if it is realistic however just looking at what they have to pay to obtain players of that calibre does not make financial sense. To spend big money like that while depending on what they had (hardly any depth) would be a disaster waiting to happen. Just my uninitiated perspective.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 It's more likely we wanted more years and Petit only wanted one so he could get more next year. We could have traded a token return for him last week. If we like him at 2 years, we also like him at 1 year I'm sure.

I was saying the payroll this year isn't much higher than it was in 2014. Have to remember each MLB team receives around 50 Million US for the national TV contract so the exchange rate would have around a 30% less impact. The exchange rate is more of a year to year challenge as you don't know what it will be in 5 years so you can't take a player's total contract and multiply it by the exchange rate.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Royals finalized a three-year, $25 million deal with Joakim Soria on Thursday, reuniting the former All-Star reliever with the club where he spent his first five seasons. Soria will make $7 million next season, $8 million the following and $9 million in 2018, with up to $4 million in incentives each year. A $10 million option for 2019 has a $1 million buyout.
vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 So is it time for a 6 man rotation where the starter makes a bullpen appearance in the middle? Partly in jest, but, if relievers are going to start making more then starters it's time to push towards a new market inefficiency of some sort. 10 man rotations and piggy back them!

I would go 6 man rotation every 3 days. Game 1: Stroman - Estrada Game 2: Chavez - Happ Game 3: Dickey - Hutch

Cyborg Verified Member Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Why not just do a conventional 5 man rotation and have Chavez throw 100-120 innings out of the bullpen? Times through the order penalty. Throw 3-4 innings every 3 days instead of 6 every 5.
