Cyborg Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I doubt it. We can't even afford 2,5M for one year of Petit. It's more likely we wanted more years and Petit only wanted one so he could get more next year.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Interesting comments about Hutchison. Hopefully Shapiro is just building up Hutch for the fanbase and not actually looking to deal him. Would be an excellent and cheap 6th SP for 2016 (at least to start the season).
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 you can leave now I'm sorry, someone had to get it out of the way.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Why yikes? They lost out on a guy they could've got on a cheaper contract for nothing. I'm a fan of Shapiro's reputation and I will say I am impressed from what I hear from him in the interviews he does, but they've made some strange decisions this offseason. Now you don't really know what is out there unless you are the one making phone calls to GMs but they gave up a a lot of value in Hendriks for Chavez when they could have instead signed a swing man on the FA market. Or if they wanted to trade a reliever for a starter they should have just given up Sanchez/Osuna considering the value Kimbrel/Giles got in trades. Its hindsight, but it just looks like they have misjudged the market and missed out on improving the club. Good thing is there is lots of time left in the offseason.

Osuna could be a very good SP long term, if not he has only burned 1 year. Moving him would be an albatross as it's unlikely he gets sufficient value at the moment. He should be starting Imo, but given the teams circumstances he likely closes in 2016.

If they believe hes going to be a very good SP long term why not keep Hendriks and have him close then move Osuna to the rotation then? 5 years of Giles just got a massive haul from the Astros. If 5 years of Osuna could of gotten even close to that package I wouldn't have hesitated to pull the trigger.

There is no need to deal him at this point Imo. It's more likely he opens the year as the closer but I'm sure the internal brass would rather stretch him out and bring in a short term stopgap to close out games.

There is no "need" to deal him but if you get a great offer and it makes the team better you should make the trade. Although given how the bullpen looks right now, it would be much more difficult to trade him that at the start of the offseason.

Let's give him a chance to start before making an internal decision.

It's so refreshing when you have the higher ups of the FO actually fill us in on what's going on. It's nice to have updates on what the team is doing, extension talk timeframes, and player interests. i thought it was interesting how he said Hutch is getting a lot of trade interest. Hopefully we don't let go of him

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Shouldn't you be in a dark corner somewhere hiding and stressing over something? Shouldn't you read the damn article before making a stupid post?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 All Shapiro said is that because of the currency exchange, the Jays are already effectively spending more on payroll. This attempt to answer his critics will only have the opposite effect because it's already being taken out of context and giving people even more reason to expect great spending.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I find it hard to believe this many people still don't understand that it takes two to tango, and constantly pin failed targets on the jays.
Followthelight Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Shouldn't you read the damn article before making a stupid post? I read it, what are the jays waiting for? Pretty soon will be scrapping the bottom of the barrel for relief pitchers.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 So it turns out we made a 2 year offer to Yusmerio Petit. He obviously didn't want to play here, which is fine. This, however begs the question why we didn't trade some used balls for him at the tender deadline. They knew he was available (Every team knows who will be non-tendered, they aren't stupid) and at a much lower price. We also had flexibility to make a move on the 40 man. Not signing him doesn't bother me, but that should. It reeks of being unprepared and not having a plan.

You said what are they waiting for to increase payroll? The article states that for all intensive purposes they already have so I don't really see how your post makes any sense.
rydermike Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 How long is the Rule 5 Draft? I know coverage starts at 10am on mlb.com. If I decided to watch it, how long will it last? If it's short, I will, if it's 2+ hours, that's a different story, got some christmas presents to buy

I am still wondering why Henderson Alvarez wasn't traded for when he wasn't tendered a contract.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The more I listen to Shapiro and Atkins, the less confident I am becoming in them. Every time they go to the media it's like listening to a woman explaining nicely why she doesn't want to date you. They have their lame duck manager in place, excuses in their holster ready to fire at a moment's notice ("Well we just felt Gibby wasn't the right fit for how we want this team to be managed moving forward," "well unfortunately our farm system is depleted right now due to the previous regime and we're spending time restocking that," "well we have to think long term"). Hey the philosophy may be great for the next 10 years but we have a small window to actually win a championship and it doesn't seem like they care.
