GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 It is literally a story about someone I know who has a research career in helping children with cancer, and the ethical questions that come up about our society when someone like that makes so little relative to a person making millions for throwing a ball well. Dineke laughed at it. I don't see what's funny. Why should I feel bad for that? You should feel bad for trying to paint a picture of Dineke laughing at a story regarding cancer as you so ridiculously framed instead of the reality of him likely laughing at the inevitability of someone bringing up your point.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 The Red Sox budget seems f***ed for the years to come. Apparently they're trying to shop HanRam right now? Good luck with that lol. Dumnrowski and the current state of the Red Sox was going to be a piece for disaster. Even with Price in the rotation, what's the point when the 2-5 is all s***. The defense is horrid. The BP is nails though... but that only helps out so much.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 That is all that is in the post, along with bringing up questions about our society's priorities. What's funny? You. The "life is not fair, why do entertainers make so much more than everyone else?" subject has been beaten to death already, are you new to the internet? There are already millions of places on the internet for you to be bringing up questions about our society's priorities where you don't have to derail a beisbol thread.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 yeah ok!! it can score 1,000 runs next season but this pathetic team - even if they squeak into the playoffs - will have no chance against the Red Sox in a 7 game series against DAVID PRICE for 2 and possibly 3 games. have you seen how lights out he was for us in the playoffs! even if stroman faces price and they split 1-1, do you really think guys like Donaldson/Bautista/Encarnacion/Martin/Tulowitzki/Revere/Travis/Collabello can even match up against the likes of Porcello and Buchholz in a best of 5 game series without equally good pitching?! Clay Buchholz is the ace everyone assumed the Red Sox didn't have in 2015 and now they have TWO ACES. that's two aces away from the highest hand in poker! So Price + Kimbrel = post season baseball? Lol

FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Red Sox are a scary team Scary bad. Other than Price, Betts and Bogey they are far from formidable. Jays need a #2 starter and they should be okay.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 And Boston came close to signing Grienke had Price not signed according to USAToday..apparently, Price was headed for the Cardinals before Boston severely overbid on him: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/bob-nightengale/2015/12/01/david-price-boston-red-sox-zack-greinke-free-agents-st-louis-cardinals/76630810/
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 No, I shouldn't. You should feel bad for taking the conversation to this place. You derailed a thread and tried to guilt someone for something they weren't doing. You really don't contribute much to this board beyond "LOL." I'll stop responding now, goodbye.
GoJays Verified Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 that's not entirely true. Not all the Jays revenues are in Canadian dollars. Never mentioned their revenue. Just what the cost would be in Canadian dollars.

BigRed Verified Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 That is all that is in the post, along with bringing up questions about our society's priorities. What's funny? This has been beaten to death, dude. Society's "priorities"? In your first post you mentioned "ethical questions about our society". To me this is about "priorities" or "ethics". They are athletes (entertainers) that have made it to the highest level, and millions of people are willing to pay to watch them do their thing. If I drop a beat on my laptop and come up with some lyrics about cash, money and hoes and it's good enough that I sell enough copies to make 20M on itunes would you have an issue with that? What's your "solution" to the "problem" of one of the best guys at his sport making 30M a year and somebody with a phd making under 100k? Raise taxes (or medical costs / insurance if you live in the US) so that every doctor can make 1M a year? Researchers 5M+? What if its a doctorate / phd in some new-fangled, whimsical field like doctor of philosophy in media, technology and society (that's actually a thing)? Who's paying their salary, and what the hell are they actually doing with that useless piece of paper? Or go the other way - force the MLB and other leagues and put a "cap" on how much they can charge for tickets, merch, etc (they aren't going to willingly lower the cost of everything)? If people are willing to buy the product that the teams are selling at the prices they are asking, what's the problem? So many people have a problem with a doctor, policeman, fireman or soldier's wage compared to somebody playing a game, but nobody has come up with a logical solution that makes sense.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Is it true that we didn't even table an offer? lol... sure they asked what his agent was looking for./
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Glad we're not the ones on the hook for that much money to someone who's scared of the playoffs.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Maybe they should've made a public offer for PR reasons, come to think of it... Now that we're seeing how the casuals are losing their s*** on twitter lol They'll say we made an offer, couldn't meet the demand, end of story.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 All joking aside, the money these guys make really gets to me sometimes. Someone I know very well is a PhD, and an assistant professor. Her area of expertise is in a particular type of therapy for people with a specific disorder that leads to multiple tumors, and usually cancer. She is quite literally the foremost expert in the world in this area. She is the only person in the world who specializes in children with this disorder. She has all sorts of accolades and recognition from her peers. She currently makes about $70,000/year. Now, she is still young by academic standards, and she doesn't have tenure yet. Eventually, she will probably be making something with 6 figures, but that will take some time. Now, I realize the economic differences between professional baseball and academia; I'm not naive. It just bugs me sometimes, and brings up certain ethical question about our society. I hear ya, but get over it, like yesterday. Supply and demand of very few that bring in billions of dollars to owners, is the take we as fans provide, it's great entertainment. Don't hate on athletes, the number of guys that gave everything they've had for years, now won't come close to what your friends future entails.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 that's a huge issue in itself, and opponents of your argument will say that it's all about market economics and supply-and-demand. that's true, provided that you subscribe to the principles of our current economic structure and accept all of the social/political/economic outcomes from which this configuration is derived. your friend's example is something that hits very close to home and I admit to having taken the cop-out/less noble cause of the soulless corporate life rather than pursuing my true passion of a PhD due to the low (and delayed) remuneration associated with it. I finished my masters degree at a top school in the US but stopped after that about 8 years ago. Some of my friends who ended up doing pursuing their PhDs are now doing their second post-doc at places like MIT, Harvard, and Stanford and make about a sixth the amount of money I do, and my current salary in London is obviously very comfortable for a guy in his early 30s, but by no means sufficient to buy property in the city for at least another 4-5 years. And most of my friends and colleagues are in the same position, where those who do manage to own property do so via inheritance/support from family or achieving it via a dual-income based mortgage. I readily acknowledge that my peers' contributions to society and life vastly exceed my own, which consists of helping a global corporation become more profitable. Opponents of your argument, aside from the market economics perspective, will say that that is the cost of 'doing what you love' and that it's subjective whether their research on a cure for alzheimers, a critique of formalism in Soviet literature, or the historical sociology of revolutionary france really adds any more value to our society than what I'm doing - I have no rebuttal for that. I just think that individuals who choose to pursue such an avenue should have the right to make more than $30,000 a year which is barely sufficient to sustain a reasonable livelihood.. This s*** is simply, absurd.
