Someone in the Mariners organization must be ordering a lot of BC bud.

Talk about Trape. f***ing idiots had no idea what they had in Miller, lol. Let's move our perfectly good SS to a corner OF spot! YEAH!
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 At first glance, this trade hinges on whether or not Brad Miller is a viable shortstop. SEA has some decent SS depth, and must view Marte as their starter moving forward. TB obviously was going to move a starter. Looks like the Asdrubal Cabrera sweepstakes will be headed elsewhere.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 whys everyone hate on Karns so much? I'm not convinced Miller will every be that good to be honest, although I fully expect Farquhar to come in and dominate for TB
baubau Verified Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Noo. Dammit Rays Friedman is gone. Start trading like it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Brad Miller isn't as shiny as he used to be. He's not going to have those ~3 WAR projections for 2016. Karns demonstrated last year that he's a league average SP talent. I think it's pretty fair

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 I like this for TB. They had a huge hole at short, and extra arms. Karns probably wasn't one of their 5 best starters.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Brad Miller's stock has plunged dramatically... and his defense is awful at SS. This means both Franklin and Miller are now in the Rays org... both castoffs of the Mariners, which may be a sign LoMo probably means Loney's going to be dealt soon, as the Rays can't afford the $9M he's owed. Farquhar was awful last season..
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 I'm really not sure how mobile Boog Powell is anymore

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Yeah don't let his defensive rating in 2015 fool you. The Mariners play every infielder they have in the outfield for some reason so that messed up his defensive numbers. He's fine at short. If his bat improves, then he's a very solid starting SS.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Nothing wrong with Miller's defense at short. He sucks defensively in the outfield, where Seattle inexplicably inserted him. Not really. I don't see what's wrong with them seeing what he was capable of out there.

Yeah Tampa's SP depth made this an easy decision for them. From the M's perspective, I hate how this means they are basically putting all of their SS eggs in the Ketel Marte basket.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Not really. I don't see what's wrong with them seeing what he was capable of out there. It would be like the Jays sticking Travis in LF. It doesn't make sense.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 It would be like the Jays sticking Travis in LF. It doesn't make sense. If they were 20 games under .500 and wanted to see if he was capable of playing it to add defensive versatility then I don't see why not.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 The Rays will at least be smart enough to never play Miller in CF. He's probably an average defensive SS at best. He's also one of those big fly ball distance guys...who are expected to have an increase in HR's. He was a 122 wRC+ in his games at Safeco. And with Beckham there he doesn't have to face lefties. Speaking of not facing LHP...Lomo should not have 140 PA's against LHP. And with Guyer there he won't. A healthy Karns does well in Seattle.

Miller probably starts, full time.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 3 years ago it was "where are the going to play all these middles" A cautionary tale for teams that think prospect depth = actual positional depth
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Of course, the Rays are likely to trade more pieces over the offseason as well, with Longoria, Loney, and McGee still at risk of being dealt due to the Rays financial issues and continued issues with the stadium. One note--LoMo is a free agent after 2016, so the Rays are only paying for one season of him. And Miller's role is still TBD--no guarantee it's at SS, though it should be. They control him until 2019-- but it will depend how he develops in Tampa. Farquhar is basically the throw-in.. the Rays have had issues with the bullpen in recent years, and that trade might mean McGee's about to be dealt.. Rays can't afford his salary he will get in arb.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Karns pitching in Safeco should be good. Hernandez, Walker, Paxton, Karns and Elias rounds out a nice rotation. Mariners messed around with Miller unfortunately. Rays get a solid young middle infielder and buy low on LoMo, who still could be a decent bat. Plus Danny Farquhar could be a nice late inning arm for them. Rays filled a lot of positions with this trade. I like Nathan Karns, though the Rays definitely improved their team with this deal.

At least until they deal Longoria, Loney and McGee in the coming weeks trying to reduce the team's payroll for prospects/young and/or controllable and affordable players. This deal is both good for feeling needs, but it also indicates huge salary dumps are coming in Tampa, with those three of Longoria, Loney and McGee being too expensive for Tampa to keep when the team's not guaranteed to be in St. Pete long term and drawing Expos-level attendance. Forgot to mention that as it stands, this actually raises the Rays payroll at the moment. Don't expect this to last long.
