New mechanics helped Bautista's approach a lot. The things aren't entirely distinct. Mechanics can help a player's rhythm and timing, which can help him be ready to hit, see the ball better, recognize pitches, understand which areas he can and cannot attack, etc.

You could argue his approach improved quite a lot in the second half last year. He may not have increased his walk rate, but he did significantly improve the K rate.

It was actually lower before he joined the Jays (18%) but seeing the results we will all take a few more strikes. Main thing is it didn't change much at all a midst a large swing chance. Kevin Pillars O-Swing% has been pretty stable since day 1 and close to his career average of 41.3%. That number is basically double Bautista's and Pillar's has never been under 40%. Pillar had the 29th lowest Z-Swing% and the 6th highest O-swing% among qualified batters. He might literally have the worst combination of swinging at bad pitches and taking good pitches in the league. Check the leader board for yourself: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=5&season=2015&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=4,a&page=1_30 As long as Pillar still likes swinging at certain pitches (i.e., junk pitches in the dirt) it wont matter what his swing looks like getting there. The end result will be the same. I hope I am wrong. I am hard on him cuz I love him. If he can learn to manage even the first pitch of an at bat better I would be really interested to see how he could react when he is ahead of the pitcher. I believe your batting eye never changes for the most part though.

Even if the walk and strikeout numbers don't change much, there is still lots of room to improve as a hitter. If he can manage to hit .150 ISO or higher with a lot fewer popups he's going to be a very very good player.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Aaron Hill type? I'd be pretty happy with that. If Pillar could hit like Hill's 2007 season the Blue Jays have a 5 Win player.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 According to Luis, he receives money when Cano is practicing with him. There is no specific amount each month, but told us that he receives between 12K to 17K for 1 or 2 months. Edwin made a bet with him that if he hits over 30 HR in MLB Edwin would give him an SUV. Edwin breakout season that year lol Enough money to live like a MF KING in the RD Not in the USA

Pillar has a bad eye and I dont see that changing anytime soon, if at all. Prove me wrong Pillar!

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Shillpiro dropping truth bombs: "Every team has a budget,” Shapiro began. “Every team has operating parameters. I don’t know why it’s not fashionable to just say the truth. David Price would’ve represented almost our entire offseason. It’s that simple, Jim. Almost no one would make that decision. … To me, it comes down to we had a very, very, very challenging pitching dilemma here in that we lost him, we lost [Marco] Estrada. We had zero Triple-A pitchers — not one, not a name to fill our rotation in Triple-A. We had to take the money, which was ample, and figure out how to both solve the Major League rotation, which was two spots in the rotation, along with solving a depth challenge. … Regardless of how great one pitcher is, you need to build a team around the guy, too.”

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 It would be wise to use both Sanchez and Osuna as SP's but that doesn't appear to be the case with Osuna (at least not in 2016), so Sanchez will have to be the one stretched out. I don't like him as a starter, at least with his current skill set, but the Jays desperately need to develop their own SP's. Work on his repertoire in the spring and see if something can be added/tweaked. We already have an idea that he can be Brad Ziegler part 2, so worst case just flip him back to relief afterwards.

Their plain coffee though is just 50 cents more than Timmy's and well worth it just so you dont actually have to step into a tim hortons.
