BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 The free agent market is absolutely loaded. We could see 10+ 100M contracts. It's going to be a crazy offseason around baseball.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Saunders and Thole non-tendered? Maybe cut bait on Smoak too? If the idea is to have a defensive 1B, I think the team can find a lesser hitter with a better glove rather than a jack of all trades master of none type. This is assuming that Bautista moves into the 1B/DH mix and that the player in this role would get less PAs.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Everyone knows the Dickey trade was bad. Move on. Horse has already been beaten and laid to rest.

Would have to be a trade in that case though, because outside of Davis there is nothing even moderately interesting on the 1B front.
DonnysManbun Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I'd like to see Lowe and Estrada re signed, depending on the $ Estrada commands. Please for the love of God do not take Navarro back what a nightmare he is at the plate Sign a couple bargain bullpen arms, an ace to be our #1 is the priority because Stroman isn't a 1 yet. And I agree we should trade Sanchez his stock is pretty high but he's pretty trash to behonest
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 So is Colabello's bat for real, or was this just a fluke season?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Saunders and Thole non-tendered? I expect Saunders to do a Smoak special and sign for cheap after being non-tendered. I'd be happy with a healthy Saunders backing up and/or platooning with Pompey in LF.
827 Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 What's good with Price though? Any interest in Zimmerman? I think we all know Greinke ain't a possibility.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 So is Colabello's bat for real, or was this just a fluke season? Cop out answer, but somewhere in between. I think he can hit .270 with some pop, but hopefully not in a full-time role. Either way, I think he's on this team in 2016 due to salary and likely lack of a trade market.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Yeah, Smoak isn't good. Would have to be a trade in that case though, because outside of Davis there is nothing even moderately interesting on the 1B front. Yeah there's probably someone out there that can use him.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 So is Colabello's bat for real, or was this just a fluke season? A bit of both? He's probably an above average hitter, but not the monster his 0.400+ BABIP made him appear to be. IMO there's not really room for him and Smoak, and both are very undesirable everyday 1B options.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Bautista to first, cut Saunders/trade Revere and then trade for Venable while you give Pompey everyday at bats

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Sign Estrada to an extension. Resign Lowe as well. We need more starters and more BP arms. We have Revere and Collabello as our easier-to-let-go pieces, especially with Travis coming back to fill the offensive void. We'll be in great shape

The article about how he speak perfect Dominican Spanish and really bridges the clubhouse languge gap made a pretty convincing argument for him as a role player.

baubau Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Why do you prefer those two over Goins? There are two camps with Goins. One camp that believes he can be something and another camp that doesn't. I am in the camp that doesn't, however I also admit I never saw a 1.5 WAR season from him either. I think he can provide value to a team looking for a 2B/SS stopgap/solution. Selling him at the height of his value is ideal otherwise we'll have another situation of Cliff Pennington, a 2B that provided value but was ultimately a backup. The biggest strength Goins brings is his defense. Goins has always rated positively but so has Pennington. You may miss a few DRS here and there but overall you are getting a positive rated Def player at 2B/SS. Previous to this year, Pennington actually ranked ahead of Goins in terms of Def. In regards to offense neither are league average hitters. You aren't buying them for their bat and counting on them to provide offense is silly. However with this lineup, if Travis goes down or anyone needs a rest, their bat shouldn't be the reason this team wins or looses a game. Overall I just see the same Goins-value like player you'd get out of Barney and Pennington. Unless you feel differently? Would love to hear why people would be pro-Goins aside from Gruber and LTBF. Why another team would want to take Goins after what I've said is if they are in the camp that thinks he can provide something. I am sure his "breakout" year has many curious and if we didn't have Travis then I wouldn't advocate trading him. But the Jays do have a 2B that is better.

We'll be in great shape Estrada will become a free agent when the world series is over, no extensions to talk about. He's free and clear to talk to anyone he wants plus he'll be stupid to turn down any offer that beats the jays
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Brett Cecil is one of the more interesting cases on the team IMO. Projected at ~3.5M, and a free agent after that. I wonder if they try to lock up a couple of free agent years? Something like: 2016 = 3.5 2017 = 5 2018 = 5 2019 = 5 team option with 1 buyout. Who says no?

As a bat off the bench and if you platoon him with someone, I don't have a problem with him back under those circumstances. Not in a full-time role though.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I know no one wants to hear it, but god, this team with TDA and Thor, and no Martin or Dickey contract, we'd have some room to do some nice things. sure....and no travis, no tulo, no donaldson and where would we be...quit crying over spilled milk and don't ignore deals that have worked out. The Jays stole Bautista, Encarnacion, Donaldson and travis and lost on Thor and TDA...we hit the draft lottery with Stroman and the same with Osuna in the international signing pool. This team in the next few years will make some trades and signings that absolutely will not work out and will make some deals and signings that will end up looking fantastic....that's baseball.

IMO there's not really room for him and Smoak, and both are very undesirable everyday 1B options. Just get a lefty who can mash RHP to platoon with Cola. That's how they tried to use Smoak anyway. How about John Jaso... Other FA options: Matt Joyce Garret Jones I think the Rockies have a big option on Morneau they could decline. Maple boners? Colabello should be back put in a part time role.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I'd say make the transition with Bautista to 1B next season if he agrees to it. I'm on the fence about that. He's been a plus defender for several years, including this year until the shoulder injury. Things went downhill at some point, almost from a mental standpoint. He was getting bad reads and dropping balls, but the range was there. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him come back as a neutral to plus defender again in 2016.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I was skeptical on Cola, but he had some pretty good swings in the playoffs, under some intense pressure.

I am sure he'll vid for another closer's job next year should Osuna be in the rotation. If he can surge he could try and bank on a bigger payday. Jays wouldn't say no to that me thinks. I think Brett Cecil would stay here if offered a deal like that before free agency. It's been the only organization he's known. Don't think that means anything.

Morneau actually isn't a bad idea. He's got a very big platoon split (200 points of OPS) over 6000 plate appearances and is a plus defender, much like Smoak. His power has dropped off, but the K's have stayed consistently low. With the injury history, he fits in nice with the Colabello insurance too.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 I'd say make the transition with Bautista to 1B next season if he agrees to it. I'm thinking maybe some kind of arrangement like... against LHP Cola 1B, Bautista RF, Pompey LF, EE DH, Revere bench against RHP EE or Bautista 1B, Pompey RF, Revere LF, EE or Bautista DH, Cola bench Daric Barton at AAA for depth.
