Hi, just joined the board. I have a random question about exit velo for prospects.

What’s a meaningful number where you should sit up and take notice?

I just noticed that Pinto the guy we got from Colorado has hit a number of balls around 106mph since he started in Dunedin.

check out the statcast leaderboards

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/statcast?type=batter&year=2022&position=&team=&min=q&sort=5&sortDir=asc

sort by average EV and max EV

that will give you an idea of what is good, in MLB terms

max EV is a good measurement of raw power

average EV isn't as good but can still matter. barrel rate is more important than average EV though. "Barrels" are a stat that uses EV and launch angle. hard hit balls straight into the ground aren't ideal, right.

but yeah for prospects you mostly care about max EV. 106 isn't super notable - that's Espinal pop. 110+ is definitely notable as that starts to approach average or better MLB raw power.

Well, maybe 106 is fairly notable for a prospect like Pinto. 106 mph max EV with a really good barrel rate can = great MLB hitter. Alex Bregman's max EV is like 107.5 for example.

Where is statcast data for minor leaguers publicly available?

Thanks!

I heard before that max was more important than average but couldn’t remember what was significant.

I guess he’s someone to keep an eye on. Of the games I’ve looked at Nunez is the only guy who broke 110 and I kind of discounted him as he’s old for level (kind of) and a guy who is probably first base.

It’s something I saw last year somewhere. If you take a minor league (low A only I think and only some stadia) game url and take the 6 digits on the end. Then open a statcast box score page and change the last 6 digits to the one from the minor league game.

Here’s today’s Dunedin game. Teo hit one 111.

It's only available at some stadiums, but if you go to the baseballsavant scoreboards and replace the gamepk= number

in the url with the 6-digit game numbers in the url from MiLB.com games, you can see the Statcast data if it's available.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I totally forgot about that trick.

Depends on what you are using said exit velocities to determine. Max is pretty useless other than to show the top end of a prospects potential power basically. Avg exit velocities are better to determine the quality of contact a hitter generates on a consistent basis. When prospects are consistently making hard contact thats a good time to take notice

Groshans continues to stay hot at the plate. 2-for-4 (both singles) with no K tonight. He now has a .932 OPS in AAA in 6 games with more walks (3) than K (2). Short sample obviously, and the power isn’t there yet, but really encouraging.

What was really impressive was how he battled in a long, extended AB against highly touted Rays prospect Tommy Romero (see attached pic). Hope he can keep it up. It would be something if Groshans ends up making an appearance in the majors before Moreno like we all expected.

It's not looking like the power will ever come. I can't even remember a time where he's shown flashes of power in game.

So Nico Hoerner like.

So are we feeling that Moreno can be called up this season and contribute to the team? Any other prospect looking like they can contribute this year?

Maybe Lopez or Taylor for position players?

I expect we'll eventually see Adrian Hernandez as a reliever, and possibly guys like Eisert and Spraker?

Also, what is the deal with Kyle Johnston? He's always performing way below his FIP/xFIP. Is the guy just lucky or is there something about him where he can keep that up?

None of the high end prospects. Maybe a couple of arms in the pen... But no one sexy I don't think

If Moreno stays healthy and starts showing power (and maintains his hit tool) I could see him being called up.

Especially, since imo Kirk has really improved his trade value this year. He’s shown that he is viable defensive catcher playing 2/3 games or thereabouts.

He hasn’t hit as well as you’d like but it’s still a 97 wrc+. I think before the season he was considered a guy who could hit and play passable defense as your second catcher/DH. He’s shown he’s more than that in my eyes. I also think that full time catching is always something that can hurt your bat while you get used to calling most games and dealing with all the pitchers. I’d say other teams will project him to hit better as he gets used to the role. He’s the obvious candidate for any big deadline deal.

For a more crazy prediction, I think Martinez will be up for opening day next year. There are now incentives to call guys up at the start of the year and he profiles as a possible ROY kind of guy. He’s also on that timeline. Most of the year in double a and a month in triple A at the end.

Edit: or they could trade Jansen? 2 years of control vs 4 for Kirk. Also, if you wanted to extend Kirk (which might not be ideal looking at his body) he signed for like 30k from Mexico. He might be an easy extension. Same deal for Moreno actually. It’s so shady but every team does it.

Trading Jansen for high end relief arms like the Tampa Milwaukee deal last year would be kind of interesting. I don’t really see it happening though.

On the original question again, I do think Hernandez and Danner could be up this year.

Helium: Gabriel Martinez, OF, Blue Jays

Team: Low-A Dunedin (Florida State)

Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .450/.476/.900 (9-for-20), 8 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: Martinez started the week off with four consecutive multi-hit games before connecting for his second home run of the week on Friday. Despite so-so results over the first month of the season Martinez was a player that impressed opposing scouts, who lauded his bat speed, ability to make contact, and projectable power. All of those skills were on display last week as he reached base 10 times, connecting for four extra-base hits and crossing the plate eight times. On Saturday he reached base twice against highly touted righthander Andrew Painter, collecting a hit in the first inning before working a seven-pitch walk in the third. (GP)

I see he got another today. I generally don’t dream on corner outfield prospects but one to watch.

Every highlight I'm seeing of Gabriel Moreno leaves me kind of disappointed. I'm not seeing a lot of power from him.

Not a ton of power or EV. He just sprays BABIP hits around the field.

That said, I don't mind this, when he's defensive is reportedly so good. From what's been reported, you'll get more potential in him than Kirk or Jansen, regardless of a perceived power limit.

Moreno the singles king.

Both him and Groshans have been extremely disappointing in terms of extra base power. Although Groshans has been injured a lot

I doubt he hovers around the .075 ISO he's rocking right now. Just needs to get going.
