The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) Kevin Smith is officially no longer a prospect. Can we get this official list somewhere? Atkins seems to love that kind of profile but it's not good. Hopefully he shows a lot of improvement there next year. More importantly, it is hard to get excited about a prospect named Kevin Smith. It's just so boring.

Todd Verified Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 So let s get this straight you will give some guy 8 years as a top prospect who his pretty much done nothing in ways of improving. And jump all over a guy who has been in the system for three years. Kevin Smith. Proves my point most of you guys have no idea what you are talking about. 2018 he hit 302 with 93 rbi's and 25 home runs. This year yes has batting average sucked ass but he still managed to hit 19 home runs and 61 rbi's. Still way better numbers then the other guy ever had. At least with him you some what have a idea of what he is. LAUGHABLE. And the other guy had no way near these type of numbers.

Kevin Smith is garbage after one season but let's give big league time to Anthony Alford
Todd Verified Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 Just to show how much he actually sucks. Traded or dfa.d before next season. Besides as of right now jays have 6 outfielders on team.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 Todd, in 2020 who out of this bunch would you like to hypothetically see on the roster? Pick four OFs....
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2019 Author Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) Damn Todd, I have no clue who you could be talking about. It's not Alford because Alford has only been in the system for 7 years. This is a hypothetical player. Edited September 21, 2019 by Krylian
Todd Verified Member Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel, Tescar Hernandez. With both Cavan Biggio and Brandon Drury switching back and forth.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 2019 34th-rd pick Luis Quinones continues to impress in Vancouver. Yeah, he's 22, but he's been fantastic so far. He might be worth keeping an eye on to see if he can keep this going as he levels up. 28 IP 11 H 4 ER 14 BB 43 K Blue Jays minor league righty Luis Quinones received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drugs Nandrolone, John Lott of The Athletic reports. The ban will take effect at the beginning of the 2020 season. The 21-year-old Quinones was a 34th-round pick of the Jays this past June who produced stellar results in 36 2/3 innings between the rookie and low-A levels. He wrapped up his first professional season with a 2.95 ERA and 14.0 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/09/al-east-notes-torres-jays-rays-red-sox.html
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 Kevin Smith is garbage after one season but let's give big league time to Anthony Alford Alford was a top 50-100 prospect in baseball two years ago and plays a position where the Jays have a huge need. The Jays are paying Grichuk $50m to have two good months a season, Teoscar is basically a poor man's Domingo Santana, and Fisher looks like he can't field anywhere. Are you really surprised some fans want Alford to play? Most people likely know there's a good chance he sucks, but the alternatives are not that appealing either.

Considering how long and how badly Alford has sucked? Yes, I am surprised. I'd rather see Drury get PT in CF than Alford.
Todd Verified Member Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 Best case for the jays for the outfield would be Lourdes Gurriel, Randal Grichuk, Cavan Biggio. But That would mean need a second baseman.

Ultimately, I think I'd rather keep Cavan at 2nd and buy an outfielder as opposed to moving him and buying a 2B.

So you have hope in Fisher who's had ample time to prove himself, but you've given up completely on Alford who hasn't had the same opportunity....got it!

To be fair, Fisher has shown that he's too good for AAA and has earned the MLB audition. Alford has shown flashes, mixed with poor play and injury. He hasn't had near the minor league success that Fisher has had.

There's a decent sample size of MiLB performance driving the opportunities presented to Fisher over Alford.

Ultimately, I think I'd rather keep Cavan at 2nd and buy an outfielder as opposed to moving him and buying a 2B. I'm in the same boat with Alford/Davis. I never thought I'd use Pillar as a bench mark for anything, but you really begin to appreciate him when you see OF's who can't field (or hit). At least Alford might field and run his way into some value. Fisher has interesting tools offensively, but they haven't translated to the bigs yet, and if he can't play D without looking like a little leaguer, then giving him AB's will become an issue. Ideally the Jays find a long term Cf in another org but in the mean time they don't have anyone without huge red flags in one area or another. Knowing what Atkins values in a player offensively he'll probably give Fisher/Teoscar more chances than Alford but it's really not cut and dry on who is the better option to play. All of them are shots in the dark.
AintNoThang Verified Member Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 Exactly. There's a decent sample size of MiLB performance driving the opportunities presented to Fisher over Alford. You dudes place way more importance on offensive production than defensive. You look at wRC+ and think that since Fisher may have an extra 10 on that stat line in the minors then he's deserving more than someone like Alford. He's stricking out at ~34% in the majors in 150 games while playing piss poor defense. Alford is striking out as much in 25 games while providing above average defense. Your arguments might have some weight if we're talking about taking time away from a Gurriel type. McKinney and Fisher will be out of the league in 2 years. At least see if Alford can be a Pillar type. All defense and very little offense. He can still be valuable in that case. What the f*** is there to lose in testing him out?
