How the hell is defense a big question with Kirk?

Honest question. Is it because he's a good hitter they are just assuming he can't catch?

Posted

What's Andrew Sopko all about, any potential?

When do we fire Brito into the sun? Shouldn't Jonathan Davis be given an extended look instead of rostering a two time DFA champion, especially this year?

It's probably because he's super fat.

Sign me up for this one. We got rid of Hanson (well, sort of, he cleared waivers...) so Brito should have followed him.

He seems fine to me, I guess there’s some prejudice cuz of his size as bat first catchers with that type of frame often end up at 1B. He’s just starting to appear on people’s radars but I think he’ll do great in Dunedin.

Kirk had two doubles and a walk today. Groshans is back.

This season has been a real mixed bag for me as Jansen (a guy I had high hopes for) just doesn’t look like the same guy... that’s probably premature.. as are worries over smith. However, Kirk, Pearson and groshans are providing a lot of hope.

He can catch, though. Josh Winckowski said that he's really good at everything except game calling. The stats back this up.

I don't disagree but that's likely the reason.

Ok maybe I'm not wrong after all being worried about him missing with fastball alot high, anyways process >>>>> results

Big Nate: What does it mean “control over command”? That seems like an issue somebody pointed out for Nate Pearson after he had his AA debut (5IP, 2H, 0BB, 8Ks)

Kiley McDaniel: Control is throwing the ball in the strike zone, command is throwing it to the specific location (like quarter of ninth of the zone) that you intend. For guys with bonkers stuff, control is usually fine until the big leagues, but if you have average stuff, you need at least average MLB command to get by in AAA.

Kiley McDaniel: and if you have like Kimbrel-level stuff and are pitching one inning at a time, you can have 40 command and 50 control and still be good, since if you miss a location but it’s near the zone, the hitter still can’t really square it up but probably has to swing.

Is Control vs. Command really that hard of a concept to grasp?

Well it's clear and utter nonsense so... yes.

Can you throw strikes? Yes. I don't walk many batters.

Can you throw it wherever you like in the strikezone? No. I get squared up a lot cause I miss my spots.

You have control but no command.

Does it really matter if you can throw a strike? Every pitcher in professional baseball should fundamentally be able to throw a strike.

And if you can't, your command is probably a 20, maybe worse.

There's 'should' and 'does'. SRF has no control. Sanchez has better control but lousy command.

They mean different things and I think everyone understands that, cause I don't think anyone here is that stupid as not to. Now, if the hill you want to die on is 'control is control and this "command" can be captured under the "control" tag' then fine. I personally don't think it's important enough to fret over...but if you feel this is a battle worth fighting, carry on.

This is possibly dumb, but let;s say you have 50 control and 30 control and otherwise stellar stuff. Could you just aim for the dead middlle of the zone and let your below average command take it to the edge? Or would you kill your catcher?

They are different degrees of the exact same skill. The fact that lots of baseball people insist on talking about them as different things/skills is largely correlated to the fact that lots of baseball people are complete f***ing morons. Thanks for self-categorizing.

Can you consistently release the ball from your hand and make it go where you want it to? You have control, or as others would call it - command.

I'll just leave this here.

A couple of our double-A bats have heated up after a slow start to the season.

Santiago Espinal (From Steve Pearce trade)

He had a 9 game hitting streak starting April 13, broke the streak on Apr 25th, and went on another 9 game hitting streak April 27.

Dude has been on fire playing mostly middle infield (SS/2B), since the start of his streak till today he's hitting .329/.400/.447, OPS .847

Collecting 28 H, 8 XBH, 10 R, 17 RBI, 3 SB, 9 BB/ 20 K in 22 games.

If this keeps up for another two months I expect him to join Bichette in Buffalo after Biggio gets called up.

Forrest Wall (from Seunghwan Oh trade)

Since his 3 hit game on April 11, he's been hitting .293/.420/.439, OPS .859 while mostly playing CF.

Including today, he's collected 24 H, 9 XBH, 13 R, 7 RBI, 4 SB, 15 BB/17 K in 24 games.

Wall always had good foot speed, and he's toned down that strikeout to walk ratio, where last year he had 135 K/53 BB spread between 3 affiliates in A+/AA.

Brock Lundquist (6th round in 2017 draft)

He had an abysmal start in his first 12 games, hitting .111/.184/.111, OPS .295 with only 5 hits, 0 for extra bases. They expected a little bit more from Lundquist when they batted him middle of the order to start the season, especially the power department. But he basically scuffled at the plate for 19 strikeouts and 3 walks during that time.

Things have turned around for him since the doubleheader on April 23 where he hit his first double-A dinger. In 16 games since, he's hit .306/.443/.510, OPS .953

Since his rough start, he's collected 15 hits, 7 XBH, 9 RBI, 7 R, 12 BB/ 14 K in 61 PA.

He's a potential corner OF bat.. not a tremendous power hitter like Chad Spanberger or even Ryan Noda, but the slugging has re-surged a bit looking more similar to his solid Dunedin numbers where he had an OPS of .884 in 204 PA.

Now we're just waiting for Kevin Smith and Chad Spanberger to figure things out in double-A. But overall the Fisher Cats offence has looked a little bit better.

Their rotation continues to be pretty good, especially now with Nate Pearson joining the crew of Patrick Murphy, Andrew Sopko, Yennsy Diaz, Zach Logue, and Hector Perez (?).

BlueRocky, would you be interested in writing for Radio Scouts about Jays prospects or anything else baseball-y that your heart may desire?

Good call, BlueRocky has been the best addition to this board in a while. I am pro this idea.

And now I note the join date of 2014... Let's say he(?) has picked it up really well recently.

Thanks I really appreciate it.

I’ve been lurking this board for ages. Been a Raptors fan since 2002.

Really got into the Blue Jays in 2013/2014-ish.

These days I’m just spending a lot of time following Blue Jays and their prospects.

Like stats/numbers stuff. Also have a little knowledge on computer stuff/web design.

Not highly technical though.

For those that missed it, the Bisons lit up Touki Toussaint this afternoon for a 7-2 victory.

He left with 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. ERA 7.11

Jonathan Davis with his 4th homer this season went 1/3, HR, 3 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI

Gurriel played LF again, went 1/5 got his 22nd RBI in 20 games

Biggio 1/4, 2B, BB, RBI, also contemplating a “call me up” sign stapled to his back.

Fields also had 3 walks, and Guillotte had 3 hits including a double, stole a base for good measure.

Jordan Romano looked better from the bullpen, 2.0 IP 0 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 0 BB

ERA down to 6.87

His three starts in Buffalo were not the best.

4.0 IP 9 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (2 HR)

4.0 IP 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K (1 HR)

2.1 IP 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K (1 HR)
