TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 BA has certainly changed the way they do their lists over the years. There used to be a progression to their lists. Vlad Guerrero Sr. debuted at #85 as a 18 or 19 year old. Then progressed. By the time he hit top 10 he had already debuted in the majors. I'm sure most of the team there figured Vlad would have a better career than number 25 Josh Booty, but it was the way they did the rankings. If you had an 18 year old on the list you knew they were somewhat special. The top picks in the draft almost always had a specific range they would debut at as well. The lists wouldn't be updated until the next year and sometimes early debuts caused them to never even get to the top 5. Now you have mid-season lists, monthly updates, chats, podcasts and subscriptions to sell. You have to do what is best for business.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I'd be curious to hear their reasoning for a low risk on Eloy Jimenez, but a moderate risk on Vlad Jr. Vlad is 3 years younger and already a better player, so it's a little confusing. Because Vlad has more risk.

Vlad is already overweight and with the free MLB buffets in the clubhouse there’s a risk he’ll be too obese to walk unaided by the time he’s 22.

KevinGregg Verified Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Felipe Lopez was a top prospect in 2000? I remember when I started watching the Jays in 2001 he was on the team and was hot garbage. Cant believe he was actually supposed to be good edit: wow, he went on to an allstar appearance in 2005 with the reds, after we traded him for some guy named Jason Arnold after a 2002 season that was even worse than his 2001. But he was only 20 when he came up, and was an 8th overall pick so looks like they probably rushed him. The jays were so poorly run under Ash

The jays were so poorly run under Ash Ash has to be the worst GM in Toronto sports history, or damn close to it. At least Rob Babcock's tenure was short. Ash killed this team for 7 years.

With 2 of those seasons being really good. The rest ranging from average to bad. I feel like he's a guy that that could thrive in the right situation (he could hit fastballs)
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Man, Blue Jays were so well run under Gillick. I don't think younger people realize that on the day Gillick "retired" the Jays were set up to win a couple more times Olerud - 24 had just won a batting title and had another 8 WAR year, and a 6 year 30 WAR run in him (unfortunately it would happen with the Mets/Mariners).... Alomar - 25 had established himself as a perrenial MVP candidate and also had a 6 year 30 WAR run left to go (for the Orioles/Indians).... Delgado, Gonzales, Green - Were all 21 and by far the best prospect trio in baseball. Paul Molitor and Devon White - still had a little left They kept Carter, platooned Delgado and Green, and Olerud, Alomar, Molitor and White were gone in a couple of years. If they could of kept these guys, developed Green and Delgado a little quicker and had them all together with Clemens it would of been something.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 The last lists analysis: pitchers in AA and AAA https://www.radioscouts.com/blog/stat-scouting-the-minors-z-scores-for-pitchers-aa-and-aaa Next for this exercise is the aggregate list. It'll be a huge top ~1000 prospects list, with some minor adjustments for pitchers (penalties) and level (penalties for being further away). Should be fun!

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 MLB.com is garbage. I still think their listing will be better than BP, we'll see.
