Danny Jansen is probably a 2-3 WAR catcher NEXT YEAR.

These prospect lists are really s***** at balancing risk and upside.

Espinal getting some love. Never doubt the Fringe Five.

Santiago Espinal, IF, Blue Jays' No. 23

Toronto acquired Espinal from the Red Sox for Steve Pearce back in June, in the middle of the 24-year-old infielder's breakout campaign. He would ultimately hit .297/.356/.444 with 43 extra-base hits including 10 home runs over 124 games, finishing the year in Double-A. Espinal produced a line drive or fly ball in 44.4 percent of his 518 plate appearances in 2018, and that number was the highest among qualified Top 30 prospects. 56.7% of his BIP was either a line drive or fly ball, the second-best among Top 30 prospects with at least 350 BIP, yet his .412 average on such contact was the 10th-lowest mark. Factor in his solid strikeout and walk rates (12.9 and 7.3 percent, respectively) and the fact that he uses the entire field well, and a case can be made that Espinal is merely scratching the surface of his underrated potential.

I think the most likely 2 year infield projection for Toronto is probably:

SS Espinal

2B Bo

1B Vlad

3B (coin flip between Biggio or Drury?)

Bench Gurribabip, Smith

Gone or relegated: Urena, Travis, Tellez

There are at least 4 guys ahead of Wander Franco that shouldn't be IMO

Greg Brack had him at 36. King get us his Twitter, Instagram, home address and Mother's maiden name and we'll run him out of the business.

Espinal sucks, you guys are all on crack if you think he will be anything besides AAA fodder..

He is a 5’8’’/5’9’’ swing first lol hacker

His ceiling is something like Ronald Torreyes..

At least Gurribabip can run into a meatball or hanging slider and hit it far/look good in random short samples and fool lots of idiots.

This is predicting Espinal to have a breakout year:

Let’s hope our gift in Steve Pierce to the Red Sox was as was Dolyle Alexander was to the Tigers. Did great for them getting to the playoffs, but the Braves got some unknown kid named John Smoltz..

I don't think most people associate an 8% walk rate, 13% K rate guy as a swing first hacker.

Just as a public service reminder if Tercet wants to show he has any ability to predict prospect outcomes he needs to pepper in the 20-25% that his keen scouting eye has detected will overperform.

Most prospects fail, predicting they'll fail isn't a prediction unless you also predict who will overperform.

Furthermore the concensus opinion is correct on average. If Tercet is predicting several guys will underperform, then Tercet's prediction will be worse than other predictions. He needs to identify prospects who will overperform. Otherwise his long term predictions will be too low.

Hate to say it: I agree with tercet.

Surely to god we're at the point where we no longer talk in absolutes. tercet looks like a moron when claiming anyone who thinks he's anything more than a AAA folder is on crack. There's a lot to like about Espinal. Solid walk rate, low K's, high % of line drives and fly balls. There's obviously a wide spectrum of potential results - all with their own likelihood (which someone smarter than me could probably estimate). What on earth is wrong with simply pointing out this guy had a good season - made some improvements and could be a decent asset moving forward?

What's wrong with pouring some cold water on an over-aged, under-sized prospect who people in the baseball industry considered worth 1/4 of a season of Steve Pearce? I have many times read on this board (and even going back to the old board) Jays fans who seem to think that all of our even remotely intriguing prospects are going to turn into MLB regulars. It's probably not going to happen and I think it's absolutely fine to acknowledge that the most likely outcome for Espinal is fringe major leaguer.

Yeah saying that a prospect is going to suck is a really strong stance. You're only going to be right about practically any interesting guy like 95% of the time. Tercet is really taking big risks.

There is no one in the world, let alone this board, who thinks that every prospect is going to make it.

There's also a big difference between "pouring cold water" on a prospect, and tercet calling anyone who doesn't agree with his own opinion morons.

I mean we turned 1/4 of a season of Liriano into Teoscar. He obviously has warts, but there's no reason to claim it's idiotic to think Espinal might be an asset.

Can we power rank , as starters, the arms atkins traded for ? merryweather, Thornton, Paulino, Perez , waguespack , copping. Who did I miss? And throw in SRF , borucki and panonne in as well .

Thoughts?

Pannone was a Shatkins acquisition as well, traded for Joe Smith and also netted back Samad Taylor.
