Looks like Nate Pearson is going to Driveline Baseball this offseason.

Is the gun hot?

I don't think so. It sounds like multiple guns had the same reading.

I wonder how modern baseball teams think about and evaluate development that does not occur in-game during the regular season.

Classical and basic interpretations of Pearson's 2018 are that he basically "missed a year of development". But that's not really true -- he had a spring and he a fall and he had a rehab in the middle there, so he certainly worked on stuff and presumably grew/developed physically.

The classical developmental benchmarks have been things like innings pitched and games started i.e. an org wants to see a guy make X starts in the upper minors before promoting him. But youth is more valuable than ever now that the steroid era is over and players actually get old at 28+. And with pitchers prioritizing velocity and wipeout stuff, wasting a bunch of bullets in the minors might not be optimal.

What you are getting at is that we could see Pearson in 2019, maybe even early 2019.

We saw exactly this in 2015 with Roberto Osuna -- basically became a good closer after missing most of 2013 and 2014.

The other factor is there is a new role just called "pitching guy". "Pitching guy" can open, pitch in a few late inning situations, and pitch 3-5 middle innings when someone else opens. Getting maybe 100-115 innings in these various situations. Perfect role for Pearson, and maybe even Sanchez.

I think pitchers just accept the fact they will have TJS at some point, and just figure they may as well go balls out while healthy and try to get that dough

Trouble is, like Reyes, they throw too hard and might never realize the dough. Good chance Pearson needs TJS before he hits MLB.

Yeah he probably didn't take kindly to being confused for a female wrestler.

And an Asian one at that. Cue the "all Asians look alike" jokes.

That’s a TJS just waiting to happen.

I'm tempering my expectations for Pearson for this reason alone. I'm going to enjoy whenever he is on the mound, but I truly hate pitching prospects so I'm keeping my expectations about as low as possible.

Thanks mostly to the Fall Stars Game, I'm thinking the Nate Pearson hype train has officially begun in the public sphere. I expect he'll be a consensus top-60 prospect in all of baseball this offseason, which is saying a lot considering he missed almost the entire season.

No, no, no

that he's a consensus top 60 i presume

If so, I'd be willing to put $50 on this once some ground rules are laid out, tercet.

Reporter @EmilyCWaldon was at the AFL game and she spoke to 3 scouts who clocked Pearson at 105mph. I asked her myself online.

Naw, I don't deny he will top lists, but you guys are just fapping over a few pitches on Saturday, look he is a giant work in progress. We have 3 guys now that can throw 100mph+, why don't you fap over them too?

The first time Pearson gives it 100 percent effort he throws 105mph (according to 3 scouts at the game, as reported by EmilyCWaldon). Which means he could quite possibly break the statcast record for hardest pitch. If that doesn’t get you excited then you don’t like baseball that much.

He's gonna be so amped when he gets called up. Either the pitch is going through the catcher or his arm is.

His first pitch in Toronto will be 147mph. Book it.

This is hilarious, called right out and backtracks immediately

This is ironic coming from you.

Do I really need to tell you why Nate Pearson is miles ahead of Patrick Murphy and Jackson McClelland?
