TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Kiley is releasing his Trade Value rankings, he's posted up to #31 and still no sight of Vlad (who is presumably still to come). https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-trade-value-31-to-40/ in at 18, ahead of Soto and Torres

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Down to 2 WAR player. He's broken. You need more data to see if he's broken.... If he gets injured again bad. If he plays but hits poorly for the rest of the season bad. Hitting poorly may be hard to detect given the sample size. So only if he hits really awful for 40 games, or has a much porrer k/bb or something will we get any data. If he hits .260 .340 .440 with good k/bb and poor babip that doesn't tell us anything.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Suddenly we have pitching prospects, wtf. Starting to assemble a lot of pitching depth in the upper minors for the first time in awhile: Borucki, SRF, Pannone, Harris, Zeuch, and Murphy could all start games in the majors next year.

Not to be too much of a Debbie Downer, but almost all of those guys are backend starters at best if they pan out at all. There's no one in that list that anyone should be getting their hopes up over. Maybe Pardinho is the next Berrios in 4 years if we get really lucky, and maybe Pearson is a high-end guy.

It's still nice to have the young depth. You never really know when one of these guys will just keep getting outs in the majors and give you Fister/Quintana kind of production for a few years.

Nothing necessarily wrong with that. Let's say 3 of those guys pan out and become viable 4th/5th starters. Congrats, you've now filled your 3-4-5 rotation spots with viable starters for league min. You can now afford to spend top dollar on 2 top of the rotation starters.

Statistically it's very unlikely that 3 of those guys will pan out. A realistic outcome is one back-end starter, one bullpen/swingman, and the rest bust.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 (edited) Watching Borucki pitch for the first time reminded me a lot of Sean Manaea mechanically. I looked further into their numbers, when they arrived in the big leagues, pitch type/usage, GB and K rate, and they are actually extremely similar. Manaea threw a little harder when he broke in and had marginally better K rates, but I think he's a realistic best case scenario for Borucki's ceiling. Edited July 20, 2018 by LGBJ29

You're heavily sleeping on Foley. He's got loads of swing and miss stuff. His walk rate looks decent this year as well.

tercet Verified Member Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 SRF fastball command is terrible, you will all see soon enough. When I saw him in March vs Yankees AA team at the Yankees MILB complex in Tampa he opened the game with 10 straight balls. He gave up 3 or 4 hrs, and he goes super-saiyan every time he walks someone or gives up a home run on hanging sliders. Sure he can get some minor league hitters to chase his slider, but he will get destroyedddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd in the majors now by just walking everyone.

Sample size, no one is adjusting their expectations just because you say he threw 10 straight balls one time. No, cmon your better then this. What are you even reacting to? He didn't say a good word about any of them...
tercet Verified Member Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Do you not see why its dumn to discredit everything SRF has done this year because he threw 10 straight balls in early March? Nothing has really changed with him, he is still walking too many hitters, the odds are overwhelming that this won't carry over in the majors versus major league hitters. I don't see why you guys think he has drastically changed?

Nothing has really changed with SRF, sure his "ERA" is lower, but he is just getting by right now with crappy fastball command and a slider that works vs minor leauge hitters. The list of pitchers that BTS listed are over-hyped.

The list of pitchers that BTS listed are over-hyped. Reid-Foley aside, I don't think many people here see those guys as more than what they are: potential back of rotation starters who could maybe spend a few years eating some innings for the minimum without embarrassing themselves. It's objectively a good thing to have a bunch of potentially useful young arms in the AA and AAA rotations. We haven't had that for awhile.

The list of pitchers that BTS listed are over-hyped. League average BB/9 in the international league is 3.3. SRF is at 3.1 as a 22 year old. Also, he's striking out 28% of all batters faced. He may very well walk the house when he gets to the majors but suggesting it because he threw 10 straight balls in early March is moronic.
