Hard to see that game being completely meaningless. It's possible it could be meaningless for the Jays, but the bottom three East teams are all vying for third place, so it could even affect the scrub standings (or even draft order?).

 

Honestly I don't know how deep MLB will go before they decide a game is meaningless.

 

They won't replay a game on the day after the season ends unless it has playoff implications.

Looks like Mark is pitching on Saturday now so he'd have to pitch a complete game to reach 200 since I doubt he would be able to come out of the bullpen the very next day to pitch a few innings, but I guess he has the rest of his life to rest his arm so maybe he'll try to go back to back since he'll be used sparingly in the playoffs anyway if at all.

Depends on the game. If the Jays score 10+ runs and the Rays have like 3-4, Gibby will likely keep him in to get that 8 2/3

Mark Buehrle has 14 consecutive seasons of pitching over 200 IP, which is nearly miraculous in the modern age.

Currently he is tied for that record with Greg Maddux. Christy Mathewson, and Phil Niekro.

 

If he can pitch another 8 2/3 inning, he will hold that record by himself.

 

He has one start left this season, and it's unlikely that the Jays will have clinched 1st overall at that point (but possible).

 

 

Questions:

 

1) Should the Jays allow Buehrle a longer leash than they would normally allow, given Buehrle's shot at this record (and virtual guarantee of an HOF spot if he gets it)?

2) Does your answer change depending on whether or not the Jays have clinched first place over the Royals by that point?

3) If Buehrle pitches less than 8 2/3 innings in that start, should the Jays consider letting him pitch a couple of innings, to hit that milestone in the last game of the season, assuming we have clinched at that point.

4) Does your answer change depending on whether Buehrle is likely to start for the Jays in the post-season or be used as a reliever?

 

 

While Mark Buehrle has been a solid pitcher for years, he's not getting into the HOF, not by a longshot. A 200 IP record shouldn't and won't change that. I think its a stupid stat record to chase, and if Gibby does chase it while still trying to clinch home field advantage, I will lose some respect for him as a manager.

i think the only way to satisfy everyone on this board is to do the following

 

1) clinch AL

2) pitch buerhle everyday until he gets 200innings

3) buerhle gets stiff as a result of having to pitch everyday to reach said 200 innings

4) buerhle DL

5) no disrespect

 

personally, i think buerhle on the playoff roster is important. No one on our pitching rotation (besides price) had any significant playoff experience, he will be able to keep them composed. Even if he's used as a mop-up guy, or lefty, his experience is important.

I think they have a plan to get it done. Would be nice if Gibbons didn't throw last nights game and today's game. I think the regulars should have played both games of the double header and got rested today. Either way are regulars should be playing all 3 games regardless if we clinch the American League or not. Its also important to remain sharp.

In a way, this is probably for the best. Buehrle going to the pen would have cheapened the record. Going nine inning would be a much more fitting way to set the mark. The game is on the road so the Rays have last tick. Jays need to give Buehrle the lead or risk having the game end at 8 1/2. Having Buehrle fall just short because of lack of run support would suck balls (although if they field the A lineup, it's thankfully not terribly likely). The home field through the playoff race should keep the game relevant enough to justify using the regulars in addition to wanting to do Buehrle a solid.

Yeah, that would pretty much be a dream scenario. Regardless of whether or not Buehrle helps this team in the playoffs, he has to go on the roster.

You can't do that to a veteran who was one of the reasons they made it this far in the first place.

 

From a non-sentimental perspective, players would be unimpressed with that, and it would be harder for the Jays to sign veteran players if they treated Buehrle that way.

I'd rather face the Astros or Angels than the Rangers, the Yankees not so much.

Rangers are a s***** team (projected .487 RoS) and their pitching staff matches up well with our batters, being lefty heavy (Hamels, Holland, Perez).
