RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Martin has been a pro for 10 years now, 5 with Dodgers, 2 with Yankees, 2 with Pirates and now 1 with Jays -Teams he has backstopped have gone to the playoffs 8 times. (8 out of 10) -Teams he has backstopped have only been under .500 once (in 2010, the only season he has seen significant injury time and failed to play 100 games) -Before Martin Pittsburgh had not made the playoffs for 20 years. -Before Martin Toronto had not made the playoffs for 21 years. -Martin has gone to the playoffs 5 straight seasons, even more astounding when you consider that it has been with 3 different teams.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 This Martin guy is pretty good. I mean, he doesn't hit as well as Navarro, but he seems to be better on defense. I think we should sign him in the offseason. Something like 20million 2 years probably gets it done.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 It's been 22 years since the Jays have made the postseason. I don't know why people often say 20 or 21. I'm also glad Martin is starting to get the attention he deserves.

I say 21 because we're going to make them this year, so we're not hitting that 22 year mark. I really don't get the people who say 23 years. And yes, there's at least one person here who does that consistently.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Martin is arguably our 2nd best position player. He's been everything we could have hoped for.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Author Posted September 24, 2015 I think having a catcher like Martin is perhaps underrated.the guy doesn't know how to lose.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Martin is arguably our 2nd best position player. He's been everything we could have hoped for. We went from Lawrie-Reyes-Navvy 2014 to JD-Martin-Tulo 2015. Think about that for a second. Talk about an upgrade. I know a lot of people don't care about this but last night we had a Canadian player hit a very important HR to help cement a game in our House. I don't think in the history of the franchise a Canadian player has ever had anywhere near as big a hit...and he isn't done yet for 2015. I thought it was worth mentioning.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 He's been worth approx 30 million this year, not counting framing. Definitely an excellent value signing thus far.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 He's a great catcher,no question about that. But when he's beat up, like he is now, he really isn't much of an offensive threat....Of course, he hit the homer yesterday and that's great, but he usually strikes out or hits into double plays. Having said that, He has to be in the lineup whether he hits or not.....my problem is having Smoak bat fifth instead of Colabello.....the guy can't hit any breaking ball and why they ever give him a fast ball over the plate is a mystery to me.

Martin has a 112 wRC+ for the season, which is pretty good. He did have an ABYSMAL August (38 wRC+) but he has bounced back nicely this month and is sporting a 118 wRC+ for September. Now this is pretty far off his 141 wRC+ of last year, but I don't think many people here expected him to hit that well again this year. Martin has been great this year, although he was pretty banged up in August and it definitely showed.

It's also no coincidence that in August he was hobbling from a pretty bad hamstring injury when looking at his stats.
Ultimate Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 It should be noted that Pittsburgh has stayed at a high level without Martin. I do agree, he has been good. Worth the contract so far, hopefully we can still say that in a few years.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Martin was an amazing signing. He's elite.
baubau Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Maple Bats is the real deal. Now if we can get Votto on this team while Reds eat 100% of his contact we'd be in business!

Depends if you're talking seasons or years, as the '94 strike there was no playoffs so that doesn't count.

Yanks win last night so got to keep the pressure on by winning tonight. Rip their heart out and show it to them while its still beating. (ok...maybe Im a little too into this!)

Exactly Last year was probably the best year he'll ever have offensively I was hoping for 80% of that offense and 100% of the defense and it looks like we got that

That seems hard to imagine in the context of this year.

mellowgold Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 This argument is stupid. The Jays last made the playoffs 22 years ago. They missed the playoffs the last 21 years. Done.
