BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 (edited) Its an off day so WTH: Jays have added some key pieces to the pen - Lowe, Hawkins and Sanchez. Loup and Delabar are in BUFF. Osuna is the closer and has been throwing well. Pieces like the Aussie, Cecil and Schultz have been very solid overall. The SP has been going deeper and the pen has responded well. Reading an article today that many feel the Jays still need another dominant pen arm to get into and make a deep run, although options for acquiring that are very limited now post deadline. (CBS - Heyman) How the pen assets are utilized has been the subject of a lot of debate on the Board. Since the break we blew gms to KC and NYY. Even with the bolstered pen its been a big issue for this team. IMO we now have the arms in the pen. Osuna can close. Gibby has to use our other assets more appropriately depending on the situation. Ex: Sanchez, who pitches to contact cant come in with runners on 2B and 3B with less than 2 outs FFS. Id like to see a clear 8th inning guy try to be established. We got Lowe for that role, so lets use him. Other thoughts? Edited August 17, 2015 by BigCecil
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I have no worries about our pen. It's good enough. When our long-man is good enough to be the 7th guy, you got a deep pen. We also have Delabar down in the minors as the 25th man if we need him. Next year though, we're f***ed. Lowe and Hawkins will go. Isn't Cecil a FA too? Then you have to ask if Osuna will be moved to the rotation along with Sanchez.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 The pen is fine. Using guys in the right situations would do wonders.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Hendriks has been grossly underused. It's really sad.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Yes enough Sanchez should not be automatic 8th
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 No disrespect to Hawkins but I like Hendriks over him.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Hendriks has been grossly underused. It's really sad. Hendricks has not excelled in the few high leverage spots he's had the opportunity in. He's the long man, low leverage guy
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Depth should be: Osuna Sanchez Cecil Lowe Hendriks Hawkins Schultz Cecil and Lowe are interchangeable.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 If it were the 7th inning against 3 straight righties, I'd use Hendriks.

Shouldn't be a "if" with Osuna. 2+ pitches and working on a 3rd which is getting better. He is closer to a starter than Sanchez is. Putting him in the pen is a waste of talent and asset. The numbers are just filthy. 1.5 WAR in 53 IP 2.44 FIP, 3.44 xFIP 2.76 SIERA 14% SwStr%
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 No. Then what does your depth chart look like?
LTR Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Then what does your depth chart look like? Osuna Hendriks Sanchez Cecil Hawkins Loup Lowe Schultz

Not sure about that but you never know until they are given a real shot. He has been excellent. We all wondered how Osuna would do in high leverage as he worked his way up the chart this year. Now we know.
Farm Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 We have one of the top pens in the league. This shouldn't really be a question.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Seems Lowe has kinda of been a waste so far. Its clear that Sanchez/Osuna are the 8th and 9th guys and it seems like Hawkins/Cecil have the 7th depending on matchups. The pen seems to be pretty well suited for the playoffs where you can take the starter out after 5 and run out Hendriks, Lowe, Cecil etc...

Obviously he's a better long term option to start than Sanchez, and I'm really curious where that was implied? I also have access to Fangraphs and I'm well aware of the type of season he is having. Doesn't hurt to have closer types pitching in the 7th. The Royals for example have 3-4 relievers that are closer material.

I think he will be good down the stretch though.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 What a job by the pen last nite. The issue isn't the quality of the arms now, it's the management of those assets. Thought Gibby did a pretty good job last night although Lowe not getting much work.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 #FreeMarkLowe But yes, feel a lot more comfortable with the bullpen now.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Yes, the bullpen is good to go And if we make a playoff series you will have Hutch or Estrada in the pen too

I think we are a hell of a lot more stable than that although both Sanchez and Lowe have given one up since the break.

Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Love the depth our current pen has if it is used. With our starters going longer and the ton of tight games recently, Schultz's and Hendricks haven't seen much and I think we all want to see a bit more Lowe if for nothing else but to see what we have in him. Not worried about next year as I think pens can be cobbled together on a yearly basis with smart and prudent moves. Although I am worried Osuna will not want to be stretched out as a starter...
